I taught "computers" years ago, when CPM was new, but have become sort of obsolete.

I want to be able to collect links with shortcuts in my Internet Explorer so that I can pop the shortcuts into posts like many of you guys do.

I don't know how. :(

I also have a problem with copy/paste URLs. I highlight URLS and click on COPY, but nothing happens. Not in IE and not in AOL. I have to write them down and then type them into a post. GNASH!!

I'm a pretty fast learner for an old guy. Could someone become Instructor for me?

JB..not sure if i know what you are trying to do. Do you have the address bar up in Internet Explorer? if so go to the page you want link from and then go http address in the address bar...right click should highlight address then click copy. go to where you want to insert the add...right click and do paste...

If you want to save https to paste later just open up your note pad and paste them there..hope this helps and if not I think you got my email...

Re: Need some help with 'puter stuff.

Hi JB

It doesn't seem so long ago that I was using CPM too - I still prefer the good old command line (much to the horror of my younger work collegues).

When I copy and paste text or URLs from the Address line of Internet explorer, I do the following...

1. Drag the mouse over whatever I want to copy, while holding down the left mouse button. ie highlight what you want to copy.

2. With the text now highlighted - hold down the Ctrl key while then pressing the Insert key (Ctrl-Insert). This will copy the highlighted text or URL to the "clipboard". You don't see the clipboard - it's effectively the 'puter's short term memory.

3. Now go to where you want to paste the text - click the cursor there and then - hold down the Shift key while then pressing Insert (Shift-Insert) and bingo - your text or URL will be pasted at the cursor position.

After all these years of using Windows I still prefer using keystrokes for this sort of thing (probably a throwback from CPM and DOS).

Ctrl-Insert to Copy...Shift-Insert to Paste (seem like logical key combinations so that's how I remember them).

When copying a web link (or URL - Universal Resource Locator) make sure you copy the whole thing, including http:// etc. The iboats system will then recognise it as a web link when you paste it into a post.

Gonfishn had a good idea with pasting web links into a notepad text file and saving it. For important links that you might use often, you can also select "Favourites" from the IE menu and then select "Add to Favourites" - which will add the link of the page you're currently viewing to your list of Favourites within Internet Explorer. You can then visit your "Favourite" links by clicking on "Favourites" and selecting from the links shown on the drop-down menu.

Hope this helps :)

JB

What operating system are you using?

To save links for later use, right-mouse-click on the page and choose - Add to Favorites. You can then save the link to the main or custom folder. Just browse to it later to pull up.

Highlight, right-click and copy should work fine, but I have seen instances where it does not. Does it work in other applications? If so, it may be a problem with IE, maybe needing a re-install.

Try highlighting the text, then press ctrl-c to copy and ctrl-v to paste.

Good luck. This stuff is lots more fun than CPM ;)

Marty

try this also JB: click on file (top left) of any
page, scroll down to properties and copy and paste
from there. anything in your favorites already,
just right click on the link and again pick
properties, cut and paste.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Need some help with 'puter stuff.

Thanks, guys.

I am going to print this out and try your suggestions.

I am beginning to think my Windows 98, IE 5.5 or something else is broke. I do have a couple of files quarantined by Norton but I haven't noticed any other loss of function. Could that be the source of my frustration?

Keep 'em coming. :)

Re: Need some help with 'puter stuff.

JB, I would also run a scandisk on your machine. 1. Right click on my computer.
2. Click properties/Tools.
3. You should see an option to check hard drive for errors. Run this to make sure there is nothing that is corrupted.

I have seen this problem before but it was so long ago, I can't remember what it was. Upgrading IE may work. If there is a corrupted file, then this could overwrite with a new one.

Try copying in another program. If this works, then the problem is in IE.

one point, to copy what you highlighted to the clipboard you must have the mouse pointer in the stuff you want to copy or it won't work,,,,,it's a common problem,,,, :)
