Need some help with tilt issue.

So I am trying to figure out why my tilt will not work. The selectrim works fine and raises the motor up and down fine. But when I press on the tilt switch next to the key, nothing. When I press down on it I hear a click from one of the solenoids and when I press up there is no click. I checked both of the big 50a fuses and they are good. Now I am assuming the solenoids for the trim are the two closes to the starter? Not sure what one operates the up and the down. What else should I be checking?

Select Trim on the Stringer is up front on the mounting bracket - so to be clear, when you hit trim the front of your engine is moving up and down on the jackscrew, right?

You're not even hearing the solenoids click when you hit the tilt button, correct?

Ok so when I press the up/down on the throttle lever the front of the engine raises up and down. When I press the tilt switch down on the dash I can hear a click from the solenoid but no movement. When I press up I get nothing period, no click.

Aha ... so, your tilt is working but your trim isn't. Something sounds off about your controller - but there were a few different ones for the Stringers. Might be an aftermarket replacement.

Could be a few things on your trim - There's a motor for the select trim at the base of the front engine mount. It more than likely needs to be cleaned/rebuilt/replaced. Before you do that though, make sure you're getting a charge going to the solenoids and going from them. You should have a total of 4 solenoids - Up tilt, down tilt, up trim and down trim. If you need to replace 'em they're pretty cheap and easy.

Make sure you don't use your TILT as a TRIM. The Stringers are designed to be run tilted full down. Trim happens at the engine not at the drive.

Ok so I figured out the issue. I tested both solenoids and found that they are getting good voltage. Next I tested the wires leading to the trim motor and they were getting voltage. So I pulled the trim motor and it was seized up. Pulled it apart and it was full of dirt and rust. So I found a new one on amazon for 60 bucks and ordered it.

Sounds like a plan! I had mine rebuilt for around $45, but if you found one in GWO for $60 that's excellent. Hope it works!

Re: Need some help with tilt issue.

Ok so I am still having issues. I replaced both solenoids as a I found that the up solenoid was intermittently deciding not to work. I installed my new trim motor and was able to lower the drive without an issue but it would not raise. So I took off the half moon and raised the drive. I pulled off the tilt clutch housing and found water. So Completely disassembled it and cleaned everything up and packed it with grease as everyone says to do instead of using oil. I pulled the tilt worm shaft and it looks in great shape. I also greased the trunnion bearings. The only thing I found wrong was I forgot to put on the gasket when I put on the new motor so I had to re-pull it. Well when I got it off again I pulled the hammer blow coupler and found that the spring is missing. It is nowhere to be found. I think the previous owner replaced the motor at some point and never installed the couplor with the spring. So I am assuming this is the issue as I have gone over everything else acording to posts I have read and looking in the manual I have. The two halves look perfectly fine. No cracks dents etc. Any Ideas folks? Can just the spring be replaced or do I need to buy the whole thing as one unit? The drive goes down smooth as silk but has to be assisted to go back up. I had my wife push the switch up and with me assisting it goes up fine but will not go on its own. I know the battery is good as it is a brand new marine battery I bought a week ago. Thanks

I don't think that spring would stop that from being able to lift the outdrive. My guess is that you have a weak lift motor.

try jumping that sylenoid so that you get a straight 12 volts to the "up" sylenoid, if that doesnt help I say its a bad motor, cuz 60 bucks for those are very cheap, an OEM one is a couple of hundred.

there are even cheaper ones on ebay but it sounds like they are junk 90% of the time from posts on here.

Well did some reading and from what I have gathered that spring must be in place for it to work properly. The coupling allows the motor to spin up before lifting the drive. Without it the motor is trying to lift the full weight of the drive before it can gain any speed. I found the spring and ordered it. It is a 5 buck part so hopefully it will fix the issue.

That sounds about right ... Nice that you can get hold of the spring.

Re: Need some help with tilt issue.

also be sure to clean the connection of the new tilt motor wires. restricted current will cause power failure
