Hello

Im still working on a friends Gamefisher 5HP and need some info about setting up the carb. Model 217-586612.

I need..

1)How many turns out should the air/fuel mixture screw be?

2)Idle RPM it should be at

3)Float measurement / right float level

Thank you,
DamianJP

You only have one adjustable screw on that carb, and it's the idle mixture screw. It should be set at 1 turn out. The float height ought to be set at 11/64" above the cast carb body, with the carb upside down. Make sure that the needle clip's open end is pointed at the choke end of the carb when you install the float When you put the carb back on, be sure you have that little red rubber fuel pump element slot at a 45 degree angle.

Hey Mahty

Thanks man for the info!

Is this the right orientation of the element?

When I took the old element out it had a tear in it, is this normal?

Also the idle adjusment screw is missing (not the mixture one). The one that "tweaks" the throttle plate on the inside to set idle (RPM) I guess.

Anyone know what thread count it is so I can get a replacement? Looks like machine thread.

Again thank you for this info, all priceless. I would get a manual but it's a friends motor and I would have no use for it after. Mabey I just get a cheapy CD version off Ebay and keep it in my "arsenal" of info.

Thank You,

the idel adjustment screw is a needle that "tweaks" the idel fuel mixture which is the first jet your carb pulls fuel from....turn out more fuel, turn in less fuel. your looking for a NLA tecumseh part and you need a part number so look it up at sears and search on that part number....who knows you might find one. Eskaman2008 more than likly has it if you look him up

Sorry If confused you.

Im missing the screw that adjusts the throttle plate, not the mixture needle . It has a yellow circle around it.

Yup I have a carb kit and a recoil assby. lined up with EskaMan2008 threw ebay. Im trying to get ahold of him to see if he will combine shipping on two of the items so I dont get hit with 2 charges.

Thanks,

That is the right fuel pump element orientation. That is not a normal pump element. You'll doubtless get a new one from Eskaman2008 in your kit. The screw you are missing is the idle speed screw. I don't know that outboard carburetors use one, as I just went out to look at my 7.5hp, and there's nothing in the threaded hole on mine either. I think ya got this problem on the run, man.

Thanks again Mahty.

Little by little , I will get this "turn key" & idling good.

Only thing left in question is the ignition system , which I put a spark tester on it when it was showing the over reving / bogging down symptoms. I think it's fine cause it had a uniform spark everytime I pulled the cord and when it was running , even when it was bogging / over reving until it would cut off.

I *Think* the ignition system is okay.

Thanks again fellas,

Seems likely. These things like to find every excuse in the world to avoid taking in fuel. Is your fuel supply more than about 2 feet lower than the carb? Sometimes they don't like that because it's too hard for that joke of a fuel pump to pull. I wonder if the throttle linkage is synced to the stator? If you look at the carburetor's throttle linkage, you'll see that vertical rod that opens the butterfly. When you open the throttle, the statpr rotates, and a cam contacts the rod, and pushes the throttle open. If you have the flywheel off, you can see the two mounting holes are slotted so it can be adjusted. It ought to just contact the rod as the grip gets to the top of the 'start' marker. When the throttle is wide open, the cam should have the butterfly fully open, without binding. If it's not set right, the timing advance and the fuel/air increase get all left handed, and squirrelly things happen. If it hasn't been messed with, it probably doesn't need to be messed with now. Just puttin' it out there.
