Who actually builds the mercruiser 350 mpi?

Can this engine be scanned with the same scanner used to scan an auto?

Thanks

Re: need some info

GM makes the engine (Chevy Small Block) and an ODB II scanner for a car will not work...

You need to understand one thing, these MPI engines have different ECM's so year makes a big difference.
As mentioned, the engine is a GM, but the electronics are not automotive in any way.
Here are your choices for diagnostic software.
The Merc Scan Tool is your best bet if you want to stay under $500.

Re: need some info

Thank you guys for responding. I have never owned a boat before, but am looking at buying a 2005 regal 2200 that has the mercruiser 5.7L mpi engine. I live in an area that has only one boat shop, so I was trying to figure out whether this thing could be worked on by a good qualified mechanic, or if you have to be specially trained and have special equipment.

You will be needing special tools. But you can do alot of things yourself.
Just don't be afraid to ask questions. And download the manual for your year and model engine from the sticky.

Good thing that "most" engines don't suffer from many failures that basic mechanical understanding can fix. The MPI systems are durable. Sure things like fuel pumps can go bad, but not all the time. A 2005 model boat should have YEARS of reliable life left, if it has been properly cared for up to this point. For example, my 1997 5.7 EFi had 800 hours on it in the fall of 2008, and it had never suffered any technical failure. maintenance items only. And not much of that was hard to do.
