I'm looking to purchase a new mid range outboard 40 - 50hp in a tiller model to put on a 17 or 18ft jon boat for huntin and fishin. I'm wondering what anybody thinks would be the best motor for this application. Any and all opinions are very appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Need some opinions?

Does price play a factor?
Warranty?
Amount of use?
Used fro trolling?
2 stroke ? 4 stroke ?
Carbed, DI efi ??
Mercury
Yamaha
Evinrude
Johnson
Honda
Tohatsu/Nissan
Suzuki

I don't think there are any bad new motors out there, but there are differences in convenience, weight, idle speed, holeshot, gearcases, number of cylinders, and service availability in your area.

Any would be good, one or two may fit your specific needs a little better.

I would tend to lean towards the one with the closest, friendly, non-stupid, dealer.

Leaning towards 4 stroke would be used for trolling, shallow water, and sometimes sub zero temps. Price is an option but I also belive ya get what ya pay for(usually).

if you want sub zero temps, is a 4 stroke really a good idea? i mean, it has oil in it always.

i may be wrong, as i am in florida.....

Re: Need some opinions?

As a dealer, I resent this statement... "I would tend to lean towards the one with the closest, friendly, non-stupid, dealer."

But to be fair, it's some of the best advice ever given on this forum.

How well you like this engine will likely be a direct result of your relationship with the dealership that sells/services it for you.

It's also true that just about everyone makes a pretty good motor at this level. Most folks use a jon for it's ability to use in shallower water than most "V"s. To get the maximum effect, stick with a lighter weight engine. Having said that... I personally prefer the engines with either EFI(4-stroke) or DFI(2-stroke).

Re: Need some opinions?

Question from you 4 stroke experts on small 4 stroke motors. When running with jon boats and shallow water it is commom to tilt the motor very high to run in skinny water. I tilt 2 stroke motors on small boats where the water intake is barely sucking. Is there a possibility of oil starvation when doing this on 4 strokes? I run a 50hp 4 stroke and it won't run tilted as high (except at idle)as my big 2 stroke.

That's a good question I've never thought of that being a problem I've only ever run 2 strokes. I'm curious also

4 strokes will run in cold. Unless you have to pull a string it is not an issue. 2 stokes can be downright stuborn in the cold which is ussually hunting season.

I ran a 2002 Merc Four Stroke 50 EFI for three years before I sold it a few weeks back. I would say it is a rock solid motor. A bit heavy, but I never had a hickup out of that thing. I never ran it sub zero, but many fall days it was dropping into 15-20 range at night. Most of the current 4 Stroke in the 40-60 range have EFI with the notable exception of Honda.

Re: Need some opinions?

I would look at the E-TEC Evinrude. These motors have very good feed back from those who own them. They are new with a almost too good to be true maintence schedule, so far they seem to be living up to the hype.Down side may be the price and I would use their special oil (X-25)? as opposed to TCW 3. TCW 3 can be used though.
Other opinions may be better than mine because I dont own a E-TEC. I am a OMC guy theyve been excellent. They just cut too many corners (due to the lack of funds) before they went bankrupt. I believe Bombardier will restore the good name these motors have had.

I think the e-tec's use the XD50 and XD100 and the XD25 has been replaced with XD30.

Re: Need some opinions?

If you run shallow, I HIGHLY recommend a jet lower. I have a Yamaha Jet Drive 65 HP (at the jet) and I love it. They aren't cheap, but when you are cruising in 6" of water, they're worth their weight in gold. My boat is used primarily for hunting (big game along the rivers and waterfowl) and fishing. BUT, they take some getting used to at first; can't steer w/o giving it some throttle. -Steve

Re: Need some opinions?

I bought a new Yamaha F40 4 stroke last summer. I am very pleased with it. It is very quiet at all revs and whisper quiet at idle. The pee stream is noiser than the motor at idle. I was tempted by the Suzuki as it was cheaper and had EFI. I was put off as the 40 (and 50) Suzuki does not have a fresh water flusher, so has to be started up and tilted out of the water with the 'rabbit ears' on the leg. The Yamaha is very convenient to flush with a garden hose attachment with the motor off. The 40 Suzuki is significantly heavier than the 40 Yam also.

I saw that a Yam 50 is now available in Europe with EFI. I'm sure its only a matter of time before the 40 is as well.

Good luck.

Re: Need some opinions?

I have a 17' Lowe Roughneck, prime use as a duckhunting boat (I also do some crabbing and fishing).

From my previous 14' Livingston I had for years, I tried using my 1996 2-stroke 25 HP Suzuki. This HP was not enough when loaded moderately or more, so I purchased a slightly used 4-stroke 40HP Yamaha a couple years back. This worked just fine. For cold weather (10 degrees and below) I learned the hard way to use synthetic oil (I use Mobil 1). Dino 10-30 would not flow very well at those temps (not at all at zero degrees!). Synthetics normally have approx a 20 degree lower "pour point".

The Yamaha 40 was a great engine, super quiet (especially at idle), and smooth. My only problem was it was manual start, and I recently had rotator cuff surgery. I just upgraded 2 months ago to a 2004 Yamaha 4-stroke 50HP electric start/trim/tilt.

I think the statements are correct that mapping to a good local dealer is an important part of your decision. I hear good about the E-Tecs, and I was impressed by the Tohatsu (and Nissan) TLDI engines. You might check on tiller availability, though. I was going to purchase the Tohatsu 50, but they have no tiller kits!!!! I'm not sure on the other brands .....

As far as prop vs jet - I'm sold on the prop myself. I hunt mostly in shallow mud flat areas and fish in rivers where mud and gravel are common. I put a "river runner" metal skag protector on, and have had no problems. The prop versions seem to be less noisy, and of course are much more fuel efficient. But, if 90% of your time is running through gravel/rocks and 4" of water, I suppose a jet should be considered.

I'm leaning towards the e-tec, sounds like a pretty awesome motor.
