I have a 1997 Mercruiser 7.4l in my boat. Its an LX model with 300HP. When running on the water the boat starts out fine and runs perfect. After about 15 mins in the boat stutters and loses umpf for a split second then starts running fine again. Then it will stutter again and run fine. The next time it just completely stalls. I try to start the boat back up but it wont fire. The motor is turning just wont fire up. Then about 5 mins of sitting it finally starts and starts running fine again. Now where I need the help is trying to figure out if its an electrical issue or fuel, fuel/air issue. Also, later on that day when I was returning to the marina, the above problem occurred again. I got it started again and putted the rest of the way to the boat ramp. But while putting back the motor was idling so low while in gear (just put in gear no throttle) the alarm that goes off when you turn the key on and before the motor starts was beeping like it was on the line of stalling and running. I would appreciate any and all help, input or ideas. Thank you all!!:)

Re: Need some troubleshooting help

We really need your engine serial number to be able to find out which ignition system you have. In the meantime....

Get a timing light, preferable one of the REALLY cheap one that goes 'in-line' with the spark plug (not an inductive pickup), and put it on any spark plug wire. When the problem occurs, just look at the timing light. If it's flashing, you have a fuel problem. No flash, spark problem...

A timing light like one of these...

They are all Thunderbolt, but from the serial number (thank you) you have Thunderbolt V... That system also includes a knock sensor, so we need to consider than when troubleshooting...

Do the timing light/spark test and let us know...

Cool thanks ill do that test with the light as soon as I can. I really appreciate your help. Oh I forgot to say earlier I bought a new distributor cap, rotor and a coil since they are all cheap parts. That's where I was going to start.

Re: Need some troubleshooting help

well I had a little time today to test with the timing light and of course it wouldn't fail. Anything else I can do or check until I can get some more time to run the boat and hopefully get it to mess up? Besides the screw on fuel filter is there any other in line fuel filter that I didn't see? Or could it be a bad hose that sometimes collapses? Thanks

There are 2 small filters inside the carburetor, one over each needle valve. If the spin on filter has been doing its job, then those small filters shouldn't need cleaning though.
