What kind of computer?
Every single type of sound chip (there are many) needs a different driver.
If it's a Dell or HP, just go to their site and download from there.

Direct from the web site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307918

Method 4: Update sound drivers
Out-of-date sound drivers may cause sound problems. Check whether an updated sound driver is available. You can use Microsoft Update to help you determine your current sound driver and if an update is available. Then contact the sound driver hardware or the computer manufacturer to request an updated sound driver.

To find out whether applicable driver updates are available, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
http://update.microsoft.com (http://update.microsoft.com)
If the sound driver is out of date, follow these steps to find the name and provider of your sound driver:
Click Start and then click Run.
Type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
Click the Sound tab.
Under Device, look for Name, and under Driver, look for Provider.
Click Exit.
Contact the manufacturer of the sound driver to request an updated sound driver. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your sound card, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Re: Need sound driver for Windows XP professional.

If you can give us the exact model of the computer or sound card we can help you further.

Here's what I do...

If it's a "built" computer it'll either have a sound card or the motherboard will have an integrated sound "card". If it has a sound card, just pull the card and get the Mfg and model number off of it. Go to the mfg web site and get the drivers. If it's integrated, identify the motherboard mfg and model and get the drivers off their web site. Look for "support" or "downloads" on their web site.

If it's a Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, etc... (Desktop or Laptop) just go to the manufacturer's website and download the sound driver for that model. Look for "support" or "downloads" on their web site. ** Most of these computers will come with a driver disk that you can use if it hasn't been lost.

Often you will find an updated driver on Windows Update, but I haven't had much luck (non come to think of it) getting drivers from there when I have no driver at all.

One last thing. If you can't get to the Internet (no network card diver for example), you'll need to get the driver using another computer. Then just put it on a USB thumb dive or CD and go from there.
