I have a 67 40 RDSL-29E Serial # J2775265 that will start and run with the pull cord but not with the starter. The bendix will engage the flywheel but only turn the motor an couple of inches on the flywheel and then stall, Here is what I have done so far.

Tested the starter according to the manual and took it to be rebuilt. I have it back now and have the same issue.

I retested all the stuff listed in the SELOC manual, except I could not find the throttle advance cut-out shown in the manual to test it.

I cleaned all connections bat, starter, solenoid, vacum switch...

Battery is pretty well charged up, but currently on the charger anyway for good measure.

I am about out of ideas so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks James

Make sure to check the ground connection at the motor.
Are you sure the battery is good? An auto store can test it for you.

I cleaned that connection along with the rest of them. The battery is about a year old but it has not been used. It seems to be taking a good charge. I will have it tested tomorrow though.

I just came back from the shop and hit the starter again, If I pull the plugs out the starter will spin the motor over fine. However when I put the plugs back in even with the wires off "to eliminate any timing issues", I am back to the same 1-2 inches of turn at the flywheel.

It just doesn't seem to have enough torque to turn it over with the plugs in.:confused::confused::confused:

I did a compresion test a couple of weeks ago and it is holding between 95-100 in both cylinders.

I found the problem.

I decided to take the original wiring itself out of the equation from the battery to the solenoid on the positive side. Once I had the new wire in place I hit the switch and low and behold the motor spins over like a jewel.

Guess I will be stopping at the parts house tomorrow to buy the new wiring and connectors to make permanent fixes to both the + and - sides from the battery to the solenoid.

Actually that was probably the problem to begin with:redface::redface:, guess I know the starter is good now though.:redface:
