1990 Mercury 175 hp. Carburated (not oil injected)
Serial number # OC289990
Model #11754220D
Ok,
My engine has the carburaters with the Accellorater pumps on the side of each carb.
-What I need help with.
I just got finished replacing all the fuel, & vacuum lines from the carbs back to the fuel tank. The engine ran smooth as a kitten once I finally got everything replaced with Mercury OEM parts only. After cutting the motor off, And I was looking at the shift linkage and flipped the throttle linkage. The plastic CAM FOLLOWER cracked and fell off. I got a new part and replaced the cam follower, well, as I was reading the Seloc manual about replacing the cam follower, while trying to adjust the cam follower so that the embossed line on the cam, was sitting lined up in the center of the cam follower I had to start playing with the Idel Stop/Primary pick up/throttle stop screws, among a few others trying to get the cam, & the cam follower to line up on the embossed mark. Well, at this point is where the motor started running like crap. So I stopped and sat down and re read the whole chapter of the Seloc guide to make sure I had a understanding like I thought I already had.
That's when I realized that the Seloc guide in chapter #6 syncing, & timing that the information about syncing the cam follower and adjusting the Idel stop, and other screws was for one model in this paragraph, then another complete model and hp in the next paragraph without indicating at all that just about every paragraph in chapter 6 was jumping around from model to model to model with no notation that the next paragraph was about a totally different motor. By this time I have the engine so it won't even catch spark, it is just spinning. ((((Also, I came across a small notation that referred to the ONE YEAR ONLY 1991 that Mercury offered the special carburetors with the accelerator pumps on the side of the carburetors for sale on the motors. It stated 1991, my engine is a 1990 model )))) now after discovering this, along with the fact that I had been trying to Aline the cam and cam follower up for several totally different type of motors none of which were the correct settings for mine.
So, where should I go from here?
I am thinking that I need to start by setting the timing, the motor had a reoccurring back fire when it was ideling really rough before it wouldn't even crank.
But I am unsure of exactly where to start and what to do.
I guess first off, exactly what is the correct position for the cam follower in relation to the Cam and how do I go about adjusting that to its base line location?
Because the directions in chapter 6 instructed me to undo the sync screws on all three carb throttle linkages to get those set correctly. It's just they are synced to the specs of some other model of motor.
So I need the following things if anyone thinks they can help me to get the motor running smooth as silk again.
1.) correct settings for my models Cam roller follower in relation to the embossed line on the cam linkages and throttle butterflies proper settings when closed and (WOT)
2.) I need the different screws that control the Idel stop, primary pickup, spark advance stop, throttle stop, Screws among any others I am leaving out.
3.) any othe needed information to get the motor running smooth again?
Any help on this issue would be great because I don't have a clue where to start to get these set back to where they should be set. Or what I need to buy to instruct me on what steps I need to follow for my model engine.
Thanks,
Gary
