Need thermostat reassembly help!

I've got an '89 Regal with a Merc 4.3 in it, when I was winterizing it this weekend, I noticed that the thermostat was stuck open. OK, no problem, called the local parts house and ordered the thermostat, and gaskets. I took the thermostat housing apart Sunday and picked up the replacement thermostat and gaskets today. Now here's the problem, I went brain-dead and can't remember which gasket went where. One gasket has two little circlular inserts (brass?) on each side between the bolt hole and the large hole for the thermostat. Does this gasket go on the cover or does it go between the housing and intake manifold? Everything is at a stand-still until I get this sorted out. TIA

If you are not sure, buy some form a gasket and use it according to the directions.Dont tighten it down until after it dries.I always use it in place of gaskets.Charlie

the gasket with the brass grommets go between manifold and therm .hsg. the grommets are for continuity between the parts to help eliminate corrision to the therm hsg. did you get a 143 degree thermostat?

Sure did, made sure it was 140 degrees, I thought about a nice brass 160 degree automotive, but trusted the Merc mechanic more than myself. He said that the motor would ping like crazy unless I ran 93+ octane fuel. I'm glad I stopped to check this board, I was gonna put the gasket with the brass grommets on the cover. I thought it was to provide spacing for the sleeve. Thanks a lot!
