I'm going to buy a paint sprayer to paint two new sheds. I also need to spray the exterior of my stucco home. There are a few minor cracks.

I think I need to be able to spray elastomeric paint for the stucco ????

I want to be sure I buy enough sprayer.

I'm thinking of the Graco XR7 or the Graco LTS17; both with .17 tips. The box doesn't mention elastomeric paint though.

Anyone done this?

Help please.

Thank you,

KRS

What is elastometic paint? Is that heavier or thicker than regular latex paint?

You may be better off renting one. I didn't look up those models, so I don't know what level of quality they are, but a good one can cost far more than its worth for short term use every 8 years or so. I have a commercial model airless paint sprayer so I know how little they get used.
I do love using them though.

Ayuh,...

For a 1 time job like that,... I'd think a Wagner Power Painter would do the Job....

For about $130 you can get a Wagner which is not as nice as the commercial models but it has a hose which will feed from a gallon can. I used one to prefinish 18,000 square feet of Hardiplank siding, and then second-coated it after it was installed, back brushing. Used it for some other stuff too, but then one of my crew let it dry out and that was the end of it. Slower than the commercial tools but it worked and I finished the job 30% under budget :)

Rent a big one. The XR7 is way too puny for elastomeric paints. I own a Graco Ultra 495, it puts the XR7 to shame and would still not be suitable for elastomerics.

Specs for the XR7

http://www.portlandcompressor.com/Store/descriptions/productspecs/3703.htm

Specs on my Ultra 495

http://www.portlandcompressor.com/Store/descriptions/productspecs/17.htm

I would call Portland Compressor at (503) 235-0200, and just ask them what the smallest Graco Model for spraying Elastomerics. You won't want to buy one but just go out and find the model to rent.

Another thought is that a lot of major paint suppliers rent sprayers. They should know which models will do the job. In fact the more I think about it the more I would contact your paint supplier or manufacture and ask what the minimum pressures, GPH and nozzle size would be necessary to spray their paint.

What ever you do, do not get tempted by any of the Wagner style diaphram pump sprayers. They are very nominal for even normal latex paints. I have one and they are at their best for doing oil based trim painting.

Re: Need to buy a sprayer to paint my stucco house and two sheds

I hate Wagner airless sprayers, had "1" and will never get another. My neighbor just went through the same thing, bought the cheap Wagner and blew it up, got the next higher priced one, blew it up and finally finished his house with with the Wagner model that uses a hose.

I bought a nice high end consumer (low end professional) airless sprayer at Sams club 7-8 years ago and it was great,,, until I lent it out... Guy didn't clean it properly and it was junk. So that's one thing I never lend out anymore, painting equipment.

I replaced it with a SprayTech 1420 (Lowes I think?) and it does the job OK for unthinned latex paint,,, probably would do your job OK. But I wished I would have spent another $50-100 on the next model up. I used the 50' hose from my old sprayer and would have hated to use the 25' hose that came with the 1420 airless sprayer.

BTW, I haven't heard of using elastomeric paint for stucco, so not sure if the 1420 would spray that stuff, pretty thick I would assume???

Graco and Titan are the best, elastomeric is a paint that is design to fill the gaps (spider cracks) that occur in stucco my advice would be go to depot or lowes and mess there units up unless your are thinking about a career in painting. You might be able to hire a painter for about the same money it will take to buy the unit you will need.Wagners are strictly made to use once to twice a year if your lucky they are in noway shape or form an everyday pump hope that helps

Umm, yup. He's right. I answered apparently without absorbing the "elastomeric" word- sorry!

I wouldn't say the wagners are great products either, but I consider them disposable and have made good money with the three or four I have purchased. If they last more than one job I am gleeful- I have even sprayed 5 or 6 gallons of B-I-N with one once. But there is no chance they will put on finish as nice or as quickly as a commercial unit.

House-painting-info.com

"Because of the heavy consistency of this product, a large powerful sprayer is needed. 1 gal per minute output or more is recommended with a tip size of 521 or larger."

Just throwing a Goggle search into the mix.

Interesting Ebry, looking over specs for various Gracos, the GPM's and tip size required do not go hand in hand. For example, my Ultra 495 delivers .54 GPM using up to the reguired 521 tip. Your specs do not say what the critical issue is, tip size of GPMs.

Again I recommend that KRS call the paint supplier/manufacturer and ask cause if he need the 1 GPM he sure doesn't want to pay $3900.00 (Ultra Max II 1095) for a sprayer and he'll never find one that big to rent. Along with tip size and GPM's, ask about minimum HP and minimum PSI.

http://www.portlandcompressor.com/Store/descriptions/productspecs/2060.htm

On the other hand if specs like my sprayer can work (.54 gpm/521 tip) then he can probably rent one of those.

On a one story house I'd probably use a rough textures roller for that stuff. It seems real thick. You know rollering a properly prepped house isn't too bad.

I guess KRS isn't too interested in what everyone had to say. It's been six days since he posted and has not been back to comment.

Every time I use a Wagner I have to thin down. In fact they give you a "v" stick to help you thin down.

Re: Need to buy a sprayer to paint my stucco house and two sheds

The elastomeric paint is really a great product. We used 20 gallons on our one story stucco house. It is REALLY thick. It worls into the real small cracks OK. The other cracks will be covered but show through. A lot of work. It had better be years before I have to do it again. On second thought, next time I'll have someone else do it.

BTW we used both power rollers and regular rollers to apply the coating. Did I say it was thick?!!!!!!!!

I like the power roller. It has got to be my favorite painting tool. Easy to clean and less mess.
