My 86 135hp mercury mariner water pump needs changing every year after only about 20 hours of use. Is this normal?

doesn't sound normal. Why do you think it needs service? That is, is the motor overheating and is the overheating corrected by a new impeller? If you are changing the impeller on the assumption you need to (no particular performance issues), does it look OK? It will have a slight "fix" to it, which may come out if you leave the impeller set outside of the housing, but should not be chewed up or have pieces missing.

How do you determine it needs changing again.

Is this a tall inline 6 cylinder? With water pressure guage? If so you are on the ball because those tall 6's took pressure to keep the top cylinder cooled.

Are you just going by the pee tube becoming sporatic? That could be debris lodgeing and dislodging from the tube.

When you are changing out the impeller are you changing out the other related water pump components? Are you, or have you changed out the rubber thing that the water tube slides into?

If you are running in a lot of sand then it might seem normal, but generally speaking they will "survive" longer than that.

Wondering if you crank it out of the water?? NEVER even turn the engine over without the water hose connected to the engine. Never run it over 1500RPM's on the water hose.
