Need to customize a bimini

I purchased a Westland bimini top, alum. frame thinking I would mount it inside the side windows on my boat. I ordered 6' length top, 73-78 width, and 48-54 height so I could stand up under it as I am 6'1. But when I tried to install it on the window frame I found out I cannot do it. My only way to mount it is outside on the hull using a side mount. How do I go about cutting this down now to fit without it standing up way too high in the air? Width and length dimensions will work fine, but where do I start to figure out how much to cut down- I need to measure it precisely but I am estimating about 12" will have to be cut off. The hardware on the frame is mostly riveted to the aluminum. I have a general idea how to proceed but don't want to screw it up. Thanks.

The bimini's tops are made to fit the frames... Once you chop it down, when you open it up, the top will be super loose and look like crap.

I got a set of directions from Sailrite company for making my own bimini top, and they give directions for cutting down the the frames. However much you cut the main pole you must cut the same length from the others too so the top stays in proportion and isn't loose.
