Hey y'all! I have read almost this entire forum looking for an answer and I cannot find anything. I need your help. I have a Johnson 115 and I cannot find a model number. The plate on the transom bracket is missing and I found a freeze plug on the block, but it looks like it was painted over and then scratched off. So, no numbers there either. I've looked for brochure pictures and cannot find a match to what I have. The previous owner "thinks" it's an 81, but I would like to know for sure so I can get a service manual. Is there any other way to find out the model number? Any other place I can look? Thanks in advance for your help.

The welch plug on the block is the only way I know of.

Thank you for the reply.

Is there another location for the serial number? Would I be able to find any information based off the serial number alone?

There are lots of eyes here, so if you post a pic, some may recognize the colour scheme or trim options.

I have the same problem with my motor and finding it very difficult to find out the model of this motor. I emailed Ken Cook Co. and this is what they sent back.
"Hello and thank you for your recent inquiry with the Ken Cook Company. In order to help you find the literature that you are looking for, I must be provided with a valid model number. You can possibly find this on the ENGINE TAG, FLY WHEEL, FREEZE PLUGS, MOUNTING BRACKET or THE SIDE OF THE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. Without this information I will not be able to help you. If you need any further assistance, please visit www.outboardbooks.com as this website will allow you to place orders and or look up the year and model of your outboard. Also, please feel free to call in to our customer service line at 414-466-6060 Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm CST if you need any additional assistance.

Thank You for using the Ken Cook Company and Happy Boating!!"

Hope this helps you, unfortunately it was no help to me. but I am able to get the serial # off of the welch plug and now I have called my marine mechanic to see if he can help. please let me know if you find another way.

I am not sure if you are asking me for the serial # or bblomer?

Thanks for all the help, y'all! I really appreciate it. I think I'll try removing the flywheel to see if there's a model number on the underneath side. There are a lot of 6 digit numbers that begin with 3xxxxx all over the engine, but I'm assuming those are part numbers for various parts. I'll also try to snap some pictures of the outboard and let you guys take a look. Thanks again for the help!

bbloomer, my question was directed toward you. What is the serial number? I might be able to narrow it down from that, and then again I might not.

Save your effort on the flywheel. You won't find anything under there. That reference from Ken Cook was concerning antiques.

F_R - is there another location for the serial number besides the transom plate and the freeze plug? There are several numbers in various places on the engine, but like I said before, I believe these are all various part numbers. I'll look as soon as I get home and post some of the numbers I find.

Transom bracket and freeze plug are the options. Anything else you might find will be casting numbers.

There are two wires molded together and then on large wire/cable/hose. Is it two wires plus something else, or three wires?

Re: need to find model # on Johnson 115

I am having the same difficulties as you but with an Evinrude 90. The boat the motor is on is a 1987 so I assume the motor is as well.

I found this stamped no. on the bottom of the transom clamp, just above this pig tail, check out the picture.

The no. is NO8715. There is the no. 85 stamped beside it on an angle. There are other stamping just above these as though someone was practicing their stamping skills. I don't know what this no. means and that 87 may just be coincidence but it would be interesting to see if your Johnson has a number stamped in the same place and what that no. is.

Here is where the numbers have been removed when the motor was stolen.

If it is a 2 wire trim motor, that will help you narrow down the year. Could you take a pic of just the trim unit? I think FR is right on with an 81 though, the paint schemes look the same.
