I just bought a 1942 Evinrude Sportsman 2hp today. It's in great condition and run perfectly. I don't know what fuel oil ratio it needs? I know my 1938 Neptune has a 16:1 ratio. I also bought lead substitute additive to make up for no lead in the fuel.

From the Evinrude Service Manual, Fifth Edition: 1925-1951 Sportsman 1/3 pint per gallon (24:1)

You don't need that Lead. Leaded fuel actually was detrimental to outboards. Having said that, I don't know what the "substitute" is. But I don't think you need it.

+ 1.....forget about the lead additive for your ob....it may have a benefit being used in a model A ford, but not so much in your vintage two stroke. jmo

I've heard mixed opinions about adding lead or lead substitute to the fuel. I wouldn't put real lead in any engine due to the toxicity. I just do it because of more lubrication.

There are two main reasons for gasoline to contain lead additives or substitutes. Neither is applicable to 2 strokes One is to raise the antiknock index for high compression engines .... 2 strokes do not have high compression ratios! The second is to act as a valve seat lubricant ....... 2 strokes do not have valves!

That was in the 1960's and early 1970's for " white gas " I believe.

Yep, people went out of their way to find gas without lead. All lead does in a two-stroke is make hard carbon deposits.
