I've got a 15' Riverhawk (same as a Gheenoe, basically a skiff/canoe hybrid) rated for a 10hp engine. I have recently acquired 2 motors for it, both 2 strokes. One is a 2000 Yamaha 8hp and the other is a 1999 Nissan 9.8hp. Both are in excellent shape and in virtually equal condition. Since I can't use both at the same time I'd like to sell one to recoup some of the money that I've got in the boat/trailer/motors, but I can't decide which one should go.
The nissan will push the boat a little faster, but the yamaha generally seems like a better built unit. I'm pretty well stumped.
Does anyone have an insights on which one to keep and which one to sell?

Personally would go for the Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 HP engine, 1.8 HP + will make the difference, stands unique in it's HP along the 18 HP model. Both have fantastic sales worldwide. Are simple, reliable and above all have more punch than any other 8 HP brand. Any Yam or Nissan OB well serviced and looked after will give years of trouble free boating, so it's a personal brand choice.

The Nissan is a Tohatsu Is there a dealer for either near you.
It would seem the Yamaha would likely be easier to get parts for.
But I would hate to give up the 1.8 more hp.The 9.8 will use about 1 gallon per hour at wot
The 8 about .8 gph. Might make enough difference if you go a long ways. But may be a wash if the 9.8 gets there faster.
The 8 hp is 60/61 lbs,the 9.8, 59-63 lbs.

Keep the one that has a dealer near you, for service, if needed.

If you have no dealers near you, or both are in your area, then keep the Nissan.

Dealers for both are about the same distance away. The consensus here seems to be the nissan. I find it interesting though, because I've asked the same question on the local hunting/fishing forum, and over there it's a unanimous decision for the yamaha. I'll probably end up listing them both for sale on craigslist and keep the one that doesn't sell first.

In that case better flip a coin...remember 1.8 HP + will make the difference, that's a very light engine for its HP.

Craigslist has spoken, and I am keeping the Nissan. I listed both, and just sold the Yamaha for $850 to someone needing to power the dinghy on their brand new sailboat/yacht. Apparently they're headed to the Bahamas this weekend (from Annapolis, MD) where the boat will be kept. I probably should have stowed away.
Thanks for the input.
