Need to replace lower unit

Hi,

I ran aground with my boat, the engine is a Yamaha 200 HPDI -01. The lower unit is damaged, lots of deep scratches and only half of the skeg is left. Since i've owned the boat for less than a year i would like it fully restored.
There's no leak in the gearcase, amazingly, and it can be repaired, but you always see that it is repaired. The skeg will still be shorter. Is it wise to buy a new lower unit? At least then it will be fully restored. What do you think the cost ratio between repair/buy new will be?

Thank you,
Mattias

No insurance? Get it fixed. If you have insurance, get a new lower unit, especially if the motor is under warranty.

Hi,

The insurance company will not cover this. I talked to a guy and he said he could sell me just the metal housing, w/o the stuff inside; gears, bearings etc. Can someone tell me where to find drawings for lower unit, so i get it assembled right, also, where can i find what torque to fasten the bolts on the lower unit.

Thanks,
Mattias

Many good prop shops in this country could fix that problem rather routinely. You can buy a skeg guard and install to take care of the skeg problem and get a body man to repair the scratches and repaint if those type facilities are not available around you. Either method is a whole lot less expensive than replacing the housing.

Hi again,

i just got a quotation from a nearby Yamaha dealer, for the housing alone, 1300euro. With that price it's maybe defendable to replace instead of repair. With a new housing it will be completely restored, actually a little fresher than before :)

/Mattias
