In addition to absolutely wrecking my prop....I managed to take a sizeable chunk out of my skeg. No local boat shops(that I can find anyway) to repair it. Not much luck finding a local welder. And I don't want my boat out of action for days/weeks anyway.

After reading a ton of threads on the subject, I've decided to fix the skeg with one of the slip-on replacement skegs.

I'm leaning toward Skeggard, but none of the ones I've seen go back as far as 1977. Anyone know where I can order one that'll fit my motor?

I'm open to other skeg replacements(i.e Blackfin, etc), too if someone feels that Skeggard is NOT the way to go.

Here's what the skeg looks like after I hit the shoal.

Just take a grinder, smooth it out and leave as is.

Many options http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...ywords.skeg--searched.1--session_id.690341783

In the past I have made my own stainless steel replacement similar to a skeg guard but, I used a local metal shop to bend the metal.

A qualified (experienced) welder who has good aluminum skills should also be able to do it....... normally the people who can weld are never even associated with a marina.

I can't do that...the skeg is too short to protect the prop now.

I called Don's Prop shop in Clayton, NY about repair....minimum $250 to repair. I almost laughed at him. I can find a working lower unit for less than that.

Bob_VT: The closest i saw to my motor on iboats listed 1984-2000 60-70hp. Would that work for me?

A skeg guard will do the trick, it is just a matter of 'shopping' around on the internet to find one that you like and matches your engine/lower unit.

I did a similar thing last year, when I knocked a piece of the skeg off. . . ended up getting a stainless steel guard for about $110. There are plastic and stainless steel guards on the market.

thats not that bad, i have reepaired mine with both plastic and ss, both are on the both of a lake in canada.pissed away 300.00. i took 2 pieces of 1/8 -3/16 not sure which and made my own skeg. I held it in place with 2 aluminum bolts, they shear off if i hit something and a attach a cable to it if it does come loose and i install 2 more aluminun bolts. it works for me,but I would be much better served if I would quit hitting ****.

bass pro has a plastic shark fin that looks good in the book. picture kinda shows it slips over the skeg. i wanted to see what they are like in real life.

Believe it or not, you can mold that almost back to original with JB Weld. I've done it on a Merc 135 and it held up just fine. I was totally amazed. After your get it squeaky clean and scuff it with 80g paper, take two 1x2" about 12" long, wrap them in wax paper and clamp them together with whats left of the skeg in between. Mix up a bunch of JB weld or even Marine-Tex and push it into the gap. When its setup remove the 1x2's and then file/grind it to the shape you need. Paint it and be done. It really does work, I'm not kiddding.

Interesting idea.

Just dawned on me that my neighbor has a 55hp Johnson. Maybe I'll trace a pattern of his skeg and try the JB Weld. If it ends up not working, I'll only be out $15 bucks. If it does work....I'll save $100

That's funny. Although so many extremely useful things are no good for what they were first intended for.
