Hi everyone I'm Vic, new to the forum.
I'm a 14 yr old kid in Rhode Island that loves the ocean and fishing from it. My dad owns a 24' Rinker, now I need a small skiff to fish off of, since he gets seasick when he stays in one place and Rinker isnt meant to fish from anyway.
Please, If you can help me find a boat between 13' and 17', bigger the better, with a 25-30HP outboard and trailer, for $3,000 or less, id really appreciate it!

I found this deal, please check it out and tell me if it is right for me, remember I like fishing in the bay, I have a Penn International 975 baitcasting reel and a nice penn rod....can't wait to get it going....anyway I will be fishing alot, cruising around(I want to get it up on plane and reach 25-30MPH if possible) and maybe beaching it and clamming once and a while, but the first 2 are most important, especially fishing.
Heres that deal, its a 1986 boston whaler 13' with 25HP johnson and trailer, all for $2500, look at this boat, pretty nice condition....just don't know if 13' is enough fishing space for 2 kids....
http://www.boats-4-sale.com/search/detail.asp?bno=18323

Thanks so much everyone! :D

Hi Vic...

Penn 975's are great for fishing with live bait or cut bait and casting heavier plugs and jigs, but if you're going to be doing alot of casting with lighter tackle the 955 or 965 would be a little better....

Take a Safe Boating course before venturing out...

Have fun and be careful out there... :)

yes, I have checked that out...

I know, but I already bought the Penn 975 a month or two ago....

I will be live lining herring and eels for stripers, chasin bluefish and also fluke...maybe the occasional little tunny or false alby if I run into them breaking on the surface....

Do you think that 13' Boston Whaler with the 25HP Johnson will suit me fine?

Heres wats on it:
Me, about 175 pounds
My friend, about 115 pounds
2 tackle bags and 2 outfits
Safety gear in a bag

Will we have good space to sit, and stand up and fish? Please check out the pic of it on
http://www.boats-4-sale.com/search/detail.asp?bno=18323
It's 1986.....but relaly nice condition looks like 96. Also has side console.
My dad has a big Dodge Ram 2002, trailering it is no problem.

Thanks!
:)

I believe that Whaler will suit your needs just fine...

Maybe JB will chime in here, as he seems to know his way around a Boston Whaler... ;)

Paging JB the "Ancient Mariner"... :)

Ahoy Vic.

The Whaler 13 is the perfect boat for a couple of young fellows to fish bays and lakes.

A decent Whaler 13 with a 25 OMC is a bargain at $2500. An '86 typically goes for about $4,000. Buy it.

Now. That said, I have to remind you that iboats has a great classified section for boats. That is the place to look.

Good luck. :)

vic- great boat for you. i fished with one on a lake for several weeks. great stability for 2 to fish from. never felt we were going over, even when my buddy leaned over the side to quickly. as for bigger waters, be careful. i had the same boat in the chesapeake bay on a rough day, and got beat up bad. the slapping of the hull will get to you after awhile. but like jb said, sounds like a great price if it doesn't leak. good luck-

Thank you all for all your help!

I need the boat for saltwater, not freshwater at all....all saltwater fishing and cruising.

I saw someone take a 14' carolina J series skiff up to the newport yacht club on a nice day, under the newport bridge.....if that can take it, ($1,100 new) im sure this can...

I hope it can handle it....my Sea Eagle 14' with 6HP mercury doesn't handle it well.....it gets filled with water.....hope I'm good with this one!

Hello Vic-
that is a nice little boat. IT would be great for you. The price sounds okay for the little 13' as well. Just you make sure you are getting a good condition motor. The motor and your piloting is the key to your boating fun and safety as the little whalers are built like tanks. :)
I will say that you should not in a hurry. Winter is the best itme of the year to buy boats since noone can use them and most people aren't trying to buy something they can't go use ASAP. Being from Rhode Island, I doubt you are having any fishing weather for a long while. So keep looking around for similar boats. You and your friend(s) will be growing some hair on your chests and gaining size quickly now that you are becoming young adults. The 13' is fine, but I think a slightly larger boat would be better. Who knows, some day you may actually want to take your dad with you instead of your 115lb. buddy! At least I hope so anyway. ;)
I recently bought a 1983 15' whaler with a 1996 60 hp johnson for around $3300.00. It will easily go as fast as you want and holds a lot more weight. Also you can fish easier as it is more stabile. There are a bunch of little whalers like this that are old hulls with newer motors that would fit your needs perfectly. Click below along with checking the classifieds on Iboats and your local papers.
Boat Search
Good Luck !!!

Thanks guys....

I would definetly buy a 15' Whaler and 60HP for that price...please, my comp has been running slow....if anyone could do a quick search for me, maybe find me some deal like this, I would love it...I really would be happy,
I searched boattrader.com, iboats.com, boats-4-sale.com, and a million more places, but I'm really bad at searching....
I just wanted a little time over the winter to set it up and stuff, install fishfinder and radio, etc...again, I appreciate your help! :D

Vic,
Great boat for you. I'm your age and I've got a 1975 11' boston whaler sport with a 15hp merc. I use if for striper fishing and boating. For fishing, 2 people is all you can go. The 11' hull is a lot like the 13. I've had it in some real ruff water, I've had a girl break her tail bone and my dad broke his. In ruff water you do not want to go with any more then 1 person, that's what I do and you have the wheel to hold you down. A Boston whaler is the best boat you can buy. That's the type of boat you can buy and a few years down the road sell it for more then you payed for it.

Good Luck,
11

Re: NEED USED BOAT 13-17' with 25HP outboard for $3,000 or less!

Vic-
let me justify that price. The reason you will not find any whalers listed on the boattrader or anywhere else for that price is simple. MOST whaler lovers would buy it quickly for that price. The boat I purchased was listed in a paper that was 75 miles away from where I live, and the listed price was $5500.00 or best offer. I called the guy and he dropped immediately to 3700.00 on the phone. Got him for a few more when the cash was in hand at his house. He needed to get rid of it so I lucked out. What I was trying to express to you was that if you will call the boats that you really like that are in the $5000 and less range, you may find someone who needs to get that boat out of their yard quickly. It takes effort and getting online to check newspapers in your area but it can be rewarding. (ask dad before calling long distance) Remember, boats that old dont have loan balances to be paid off, so $3000.00 sounds like a lot to a guy who hasn't used his boat in two years and who knows not many people are buying right now in the winter. Important, if someone is selling a boat right now...they must really need/want to either quit paying for storage, get it out of the yard, or desperately need the money for something else. Otherwise, they would wait until summer when EVERYONE has boat fever! Again, good luck! :D

OK, so should I just grab this 13' and 25HP O/B while I got the chance, for $2500?

It's in New York, so I think I'll have to drive up there, I mean, If I get it shipped from NY to RI it must cost around $500 right?

I am used to fishing in a 14' SeaEagle inflatable with a 6HP mercury. Do you think with this noat I will notice a great difference in speed and stability than with the sea eagle inflatable? Probably more room than it also....the pontoons on the sea eagle take up ALOT of space and the beam is like 4 feet....this Boston Whaler is closer to 6....I think it'll make up for the 1' loss.
I'm going to ask my dad to call this guy tomorrow. Thanks for your help everyone! couldnt of done it without you all! :D

The whaler will be about as stable as your SeaEagle, The whaler will be faster and have a lot more room.

11

vic, it sounds like you've done your homework. if it feels right, buy it and i'm sure you'll be happy. but i can say, in my few years more experience, i've always seen something i wanted real bad (car, truck, boat). someone in my life (mom, dad, friend) told me to hold off. sure enough, a better deal has always come along. it sucks letting a deal pass, but it may work out better. bottom line, if this is the first boat you found and you've only been looking for a few weeks, you may want to keep looking. good luck-

Vic, go for it, but try to get a deal. Take your dad and maybe a third person, all three of you take turns looking it over and finding any potential problems.

The ad/link you posted says "negotiable", so let your dad say "its just too much, you will need money for, pfd's or anchors, or registration, or tires, or bearings, or batteries," etc. Then offer them $2200 and hope. If they won't take it, you can always go to lunch and come back in a half hour and make them a higher offer.

Oh, and most importantly, TAKE CASH, and let them know that you are buying it, they may be more likely to accept your offer, being a kid and all.

Good Luck. Go with a plan, come home with a boat!!!

thanks guys.
I don't know what I am going to do yet.
I probably am going for the 13' Whaler, but I think I'm going to search a bit more before I call up, even if it's only a 4 hour search, I'll look at places like iboats, boattrader, etc. I don't know of any others, if any would like to share I'd be happy....
Thanks! :)
