I am looking for a high hp yet lightweight outboard for my project... I know I'm asking a lot but just seeing what is out there... for those of you whom have smaller outboards would you list the year, make, and model and weight or as much of that info as you may have?

I have a 1970 4 hp Johnson outboard that weights 38 lbs. I want to stay as close as possible to 50 lbs and try to get more hp. Many of you have seen this and for those of you who havent... here is what its for so you understand the weight issue. :)

An 80's merc 70 at 190 lbs would be about right.
Now that would get some speed out of the project.

After all, if it's not scary, what's the point?

:)

This might scare you even more -

Suzuki Pre 97 8Hp - it's what all the Canadian bathtub racers use...
I am going with a Merc 8hp (Bought here on I-boats last night!), either one should be scary, yet light enough.

The Merc weighs in at 74lbs dry
I believe the Suzuki (If you can find one) will weigh in a lot less, maybe 15-20 lbs worth? Maybe..

Wimperdink- athlough NADA guides is completely worthless as far as finding the used values of boats and motors, it provides a lot of good info in that you can get the weight of almost any make outboard at any horsepower. you may want to look there.

Go to any of the manufacturers web sites. Weights are listed for every engine.

Re: Need various outboard weight info

problem is i'm not willing to purchase a brand new motor :D and the older they are typically the heavier they are. I found a 9.8 or 9.9 merc on ebay guy said it weighs 66 lbs.. Bet that would get it movin

I'll check nada :) Thanks

Wimperdink. Try looking for about a 5 to 6 hp 2 stroke. There's no way in h*** I'd put a 9.9 on that thing. You get that up on plane and one of those outriggers grabs a wake and you're done. You'd be lucky if all it does is rip the outrigger off the canoe. If it holds, it'll flip that canoe in a heartbeat. Just a thought. Wear a life jacket and a helmet. :D

Not always the case. A 1974 40 hp Evinrude weighs 131 lbs. A 2005 40 hp Evinrude weighs 240 lbs. Granted, I'm comparing apples to oranges here.

Wimperdink- manufacture's sites are current and new motors, but NADA guides goes back to I believe the early 70's so then you have a wide range of years to look at.

Unless you just have money to throw away. I would not spend any money on that little dude. Like said above that could be a death trap. Tim
