need verification on 87 205 belt size

Hey all! Its been a long time since I have posted its been a few good seasons for me. I got a simple one for ya, I need to replace my power steering n alt V belts, they are showing age and with the harsh winter we just had they are cracking an so forth. My issue is I can't find the slips from the last belts I bought and I'm not gonna bother with paying for over priced marina parts, and they are in willing to tell me the belt size so I turn to you good folks. My investigating found that they are both 29/64 belts....the power steering is 52in long and the alt is 44in long. Can anyone confirm that...before anyone says, yes I know, cut some rope, run it around pullies n measure it, I want to know the proper size.

Ayuh,..... Have ya taken yer's off, 'n looked for the part number written on it,..??

If not, just bring 'em to yer local parts house, 'n match 'em up,...
Or,...
Search for the right part numbers from an on-line data base, like iboats, or a Mercruiser site, then cross the numbers,...
Use yer serial numbers to find the Right ones,...

Just remove the old belts and take them to any auto parts store. They will match them up with the right ones.

I did try and look up your belts, but without the engine serial number and the diameter of the water pump pulley (could be 5-1/2" or 7") I can't be sure.

The belts are pretty rough and warn they are pretty thin as well, can't make out the numbers on them, was hoping to avoid multi trips, should be easy to get a good est of length from them, my biggest concern is spec width. Its a pretty good trip from home to the parts store so the more info I have going the better my chances of not needing to make it again cuz what I got was wrong. The water pump pully is 7in

Your engine falls right in the middle of several major changes. In particular the ones that affect belt size are the type of mounting for the steering pump (cast or stamped) and the engine front cover ('old style' or 'new style')... This is why we ask for serial numbers. Usually a serial number will sort that out.

I think it's going to be easy just to go and remove the belts and take them with you.

What do you use to search info via SN, I have several manuals and so on, just wondering if there was a site that you might be using that lists service notes and such info via SN, cuz that would be handy

Mine is a collection gathered over many years. Some from sites like this, some from things I have scanned in, and some I have been fortunate enough to be send by different people. I also have the Merc EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) from when I was a Merc dealer, so I can look up some weird stuff too...

One site you can use with the engine serial number is the Merc site itself. https://webapps.brunswick.com/literature/literatureSearch.do

Another is Mercury Mercruiser engines and parts

For service-manuals and service bulletins, try boatfix dot com

As far as manuals go, you have one choice, Merc genuine. The rest are mealy knee-pads or fire-starters....

Cool thanks, I'm always looking for new sources of info. I have collected a small library or merc manuals from the folks hear but find they lack details with some things, a little to vaige for my liking.
