Volvo web site refers you to there dealers. So I thought I would ask here or if you know where to ask and trust the answer. Have a 1972 chrysler 360 ci to a volvo 270 outdrive. The question; Is there a pilot bearing in the motors crank that the drive shaft(in the bell housing) rides in or dose it float inside the wibration damper? They dont say anthing about it in 2 manuals only chrysler car books (manual trans).

It should not need one. Look in parts book for that drive/engine combo. The service manuals I have does not have that engine, only Volvo and GMC, does not show a bearing on the V8 GMC engine.
What did the old engine have, is end of shaft machined for bearing/bushing?

As far as i rember it floats in the splines in damper plate, no center bearing, at least on AQ 133 and 145, both with 270 drive. Gene70 will know - if he doesnt show up - try to direct thread directly to him.

I think he even posted a telephone number for you

Re: need Volvo tech help-hard core question

F'in...I have dealt with a few volvo/chrysler packages in the past...everything on the outside of the transom is pretty much standard volvo stuff, any 270 parts book will get you what you need....the motor is pretty much chrysler marine, nothing to unfamiliar there.... the problem is the parts used to mate the 2 together...most of it was custom production runs, nobody kept inventory or parts support...there was no need of it, really.........you have a stub driveshaft in the bell housing, maybe supported by 1 ball bearing, maybe by 2...if you have only 1 bearing, the pilot bushing support is essential, if you have 2, it is not needed...I would assume you checked that shaft for smooth rotation and side play before you bolted a motor on it...these bearings do fail, when the u joint bellows gets holed water gets in these bearings and destroys them...if you have good stub shaft bearings and noise only when turning or tipping the drive, then it is U Joint rattle...it is not uncommon, even with good u joints.....but you should check them for roughness.....

It has a pilot bushing. Your bell housing shaft must go into a turnable end to keep it aligned. Without this bushing you will tear up the flex plate assembly. The bellhousing has one bearing, two seals and two snap rings. Then it goes through the flex plate bolted to the flywheel. Must have a support going into crankshaft, either bearing or bushing. If you have a FAX phone I will send you a parts breakdown showing the Chrysler Marine bell housing assembly. You can also call me at 1-800-949-2189
