I know this is a frequently asked question, but it concerns the stutter switch on a 1987 2.5 L Mercruiser. Last time at the lake I needed biceps, or is it triceps??? to get it into neutral. At the time I didn't think about repairing it, ya know? having too much fun. So I get it home and test the switch and it doesn't work, but did I test it right?

I was in neutral and twisted the switch both ways, nothing. Does it need to be in drive? Does it need to be in water for that whole resistance backpressure thing?

Thanks in advance for your help and when will I ever see any of you on a lake in Arizona? Lake Pleasant mostly

There is nothing on the shift interrupt switch to twist. What switch were you "Twisting"????
Disconnect the cables at the engine and see if the cables are stiff. The plate where the cables are attached also includes the shift interrupt switch. Activate it by pushing the lever on the switch and the engine should die.

This might help also: Shift cable replacement

I was twisting, maybe should have wrote "rotating" the black switch activator with the spring steel "ears", that has the two plastic lobes that actuate the actual switch.

You should have killed the engine when you worked the switch either way. If it didn't, disconnect the leads and check continuity on it. I don't remember whether the switch grounds or opens the ignition circuit to kill the engine. Either way, the reading from the normal position to any other should change your reading.

The switch goes to ground when activated. This diagram is for a V8, but the shift interrupt switch wiring is the same.
