I have a 1938 Neptune Jr. Single 1.2HP Model: 1A38 [ Precursor to the Mighty Mite series ]
I had the motor running last about 1 year ago and it ran perfectly... I Acquired it from my grandfather 2 years ago with the hope of using it for the summer on my boat... IT was in his basement for 20 plus years in a dry environment. When i initially brought it back to my house it had no: gas tank, exhaust tube, & E.T.C.. But over all it was in great shape except for the skeg which was broken off [I still have no clue how it got broken]. I put it on my motor stand and cleaned the dust off of it and cleaned the original spark plug. Then i took a old weed wacker gas tank, mounted it to the stand and attached one of the plastic tubing to the copper tubing that went to the original gas tank to the motor and put 2-stroke gasoline in it and after a couple of pulls and minor adjustments to the magneto lever it started right up and ran great after sitting that long. Of course it was out of water [ I was told it might have a very small water leak on the head ]... i only let it run for about 20 - 30 seconds out of water so no damage would occur. A day later i start it up briefly then put it in a bucket of water and start it again... turns out their was a leak and after a minute it cut out.
i fixed the head and polished every brass part on the motor and all the grounds on the magneto plate. cleaned all the wiring connectors and replaced the wire to the kill switch. Then it sat apart in a box with everything labeled and pictures of every part and where it went.
Spring was around the corner and i put it all together and lubricated the lower unit gearbox with grease and the piston with 2-stroke oil. I Checked for spark and no spark at all. I checked the connections on the plate and a wire was in the wrong spot on the point while unbolting the point i snapped the bolt that had all the spacers and connections were on.
So, after many attempts to make a new bolt gave up and contacted Doug Penn at www.penn.itgo.com where i order a couple of parts for my Neptune and answered all my questions. He was very helpful and knows a lot about the old antique outboards. He also has a ton of old stock outboard parts.:star::star::star::star::star:
:focus:
Now that everything is back together and the new parts are attached, I go to start it and still no spark!!!! and now the magneto plate is hitting the flywheel very slightly. I know the point is fine so that leaves the: Condenser, flywheel, magneto/coil or a bad component. The magneto plate is model: 51-A by the Eisemann Corporation.
Any Help Will Be Great
Thanks in advance
