I have 2 PC's within 3' of each other, a Dell dimension 3000 with windows xp and a packard bell with windows 98.
Is there a simple way of networking the 2 together to allow file & printer sharing between them.

I think it is called pier to pier RP. You need a Cat5 cable with R45 connectors (the ones that are bigger than a telephone jack connector)

That's as far as I can take ya! An expert will have to step in here to help you program them up. I had a setup, just like that at work. You could see all the drives on each computer and I had 4 printers (two on each unit) and they were all accessable from either computer.

It worked flawlessly for several years, I just don't know how to set it up.

Not sure what you have on your laptop but each computer needs a network card, either built in or add on PCI or PCMCIA card.

It's not too difficult to connect 2 computers for file/printer sharing etc.Without a router or switch, you can use a Cross-over cable (Cat 5) . Don't try to use a Cat 5 Patch (straight-thru) cable. Plug this cable into each computers NIC port and you're on your way. You will have to turn on File and Print sharing for each computer. You'll then need to specify which folders , on each computer, you want to share. You'll basically do the same thing for each shared printer as well. This is a simple explaination, there are only a couple more easy steps, but that's basically it. It's easier than you might think.

If you do decide to use a router or network switch, you'd use Cat5 Patch cables instead of the Cross-Over cables mentioned above. The advantage of a router-switch is that you can add additional computers easily.

There are many web sites that will walk you thru the whole process, step by step. All this is really not hard to do, if you take it one step at a time.

Don't forget to look into the permission. You have to set the permission on the printer to allow sharing.
