Hi:

I just removed the lower unit on my '79 115hp, and think my shift lever may have moved on the way down. It was very corroded and a difficult remove.

When I turn the crankshaft clockwise, the propeller shaft turns clockwise, too. I'm guessing I've bumped it out of neutral. My questions.

1) Am I in forward or reverse?

2) If I move the shift linkage, how do I know I'm in dead neutral?

Thanks for any help. This is my first question, but I've been reading the board for ages, and every other question I've ever had has been answered. Thanks!

Hi Rednight,
You're in forward. If the prop were turning counter-clockwise you'd be in reverse. When in neutral, you can turn the prop in either direction.
Backlash

Thanks so much. That clears up a lot. I assume by "turn either direction," you mean without turning the crank shaft.

Thanks again.
