Hello, I have a 1989 baja islander with a mercruiser 3.0. I seem to be having some issues putting it in neutral. When going forward and when I put the handle into the neutral position it is still idling forward a little bit. I have to pull the handle back towards reverse just a little and then back to neutral and then it is fine. The same when I'm going backwards just the opposite. I'm used to doing this but my wife wants to drive and I would like for her to learn to trailer it because it is a pain for me to dock , go get my truck and then hop back in the boat and trailer it. I figure it would be easier for her to trailer the boat rather than learning to back the truck and trailer down to the dock. Any advice and help would be great.

Does it take a lot of effort to pull it out of gear? If so, is your shift interrupt switch working? Otherwise I would suspect some slop either in the shifter or a bad cable perhaps.

I have another question. I was looking at some other forums on this site about the controller. Is it difficult to take the controller off and grease the contact points? According to the other forums that was the final step after repairing the controller was greasing the contact points.
