I have purchased a new neutral switch for my 1972 50hp Johnson, (housed in the forward control unit). The wiring layout is physically different to the old one, (both have 5 wires) the part number is 385353. It has 2 white wires in the small loom on the switch, one to the ignition switch and one to the loom to the motor. Problem is I do not know which is which, after chasing the switch for months I do not want to stuff it up. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bill.

Can you upload any pictures of the 2 switches or the connectors?

Generally a neutral safety switch is just a 2 pole switch that isn't polarity sensitive so it doesn't matter which terminal you connect the wires to. There are different types of switches though (normally open and normally closed) depending on what type of ignition system you have. Most neutral switches are normally closed and the contacts are held open by the throttle lever so when closed they complete the starting circuit. This can be bypassed but it is not recommended.
