Ok, I have a 1978 70hp chrysler and like many others, have a CD unit that is crapping out on me. Finding one now is nearly impossible and if you can, run anywhere between $250 - $500 (Used). Having a muscle car background, I looked for other solutions, and the simple MSD CD ignition came to mind. Looking at their wiring diagram, the only difference in the wires is that the MSD has an extra ground wire. After wiring it up according to the instructions, and making sure the negative coil side is grounded, it runs better than ever. The MSD Street Fire ignition can be found on EBAY for $125 delivered. It fits inside the engine case and is brand new compared to a $250 used piece. I hope that this can help those that may be having issues. If you have any questions, shoot me an email through this forum.

so are you saying you need 3 for a 3 cylinder ??? Also means if the charge coil for the ignition has gone in your stator you can get it going as you will only need the trigger coil for this unit.

Ok, I realize that a little more explaination may be in order. The MSD will replace the black CD unit box. If you trace all the wires from the old CD unit you will see they go to the following: Constant +, swtiched +, coil +, coil ground, and points on distributor. Pop on the MSD website and look at the wiring diagram for the points wiring schematic. They are exactly the same except that the MSD has an extra ground wire. You will not use the magnetic pickup wires and it even specifies that in the manual if you are using a points system. Both units do exactly the same thing, they send a high voltage pulse to the coil based off the points opening and closing. Make sure you ground the coil as it is on the old system. I removed the old CD unit, cut a board and mounted it to the same mounting studs.(1/2" exterior plywood should work) I screwed the coil bracket and new MSD unit to the board so that the top will still go on. You only need one MSD unit. It says it is for 4, 6, and 8 cylinders. This is for the rev limiter settings and if you leave it set for 8 cylinders, should not come into play as it will think the engine is spinning slower than it is and never cut out the ignition just like the old CD unit. (Running a two stroke 3 cylinder, I believe that if you set if for 6 cylinders, the rev limiter will actually work correctly, but being a boat with RPMs usually being controlled by the prop pitch, I was not concerned with over revving the engine) Besides having to make a mounting board, it truly is a simple install and should only take about 1/2 hour if you have some simple wiring skills. (soldering, crimping, etc.)

Magnapower ignition system that jeep8589 is working with has a distributor similar to most automotive ignition systems. That's why the MSD system can be adapted to it.

He is correct. Should work with any system that meets their citeria:

The CD is built around a durable cast aluminum housing and easily connects to points, amplifiers and magnetic pickup distributors. There's even an adjustable rev limiter for overrev protection!

so you are saying if your motor has one coil per cylinder you need one unit per coil and only the pick up coil or contacts under the flywheel ...

Well, I guess you could use one for each coil, but that would seem more expensive than actually buying the original part. It is designed to work with engines with one coil to fire all the plugs.

Jeep, Which model / part number on the MSD ignition module did you use? I have an '82 Chrysler 140hp and I think I fried my module hooking up my battery cables to the wrong posts on my battery. At least there was a loud hiss followed by smoke coming from the engine cover. After removing the engine cover, all I could find was that the ignition module was VERY hot and something was dripping from it. I'm so embarrassed...

Looks like you lost the 'magic smoke'.

I'm interested in what part number is being used here as well. May be worth while to swap this as I believe mine may be on its way out.

CDI Electronics has a aftermarket CD unit for disterbutor ign. Artnumber 115-3301.
Cost alot, about 300 dollars but it brand new and will work many years without problem. It is missing the tachowire (white) but you can live with that.

This must be part:

http://www.amazon.com/MSD-5520-Street-Ignition-Control/dp/B001O28622

But, confirmation would be great! Mine old motorola still works and I've got a used spare, but it would be nice to have an inexpensive option for a new replacement!

Mike Bruce

I agree! Part number confirmation would be outstanding! The instructions for the MSD-5520 include a number of different wiring diagrams for different ignitions so I'm sure I'll need a little more study to wire it up correctly.

It is confirmed. I went ahead and bought the streetfire cd pack and it works beautifully. Will post up some pics later.

That's outstanding! I look forward to seeing the pics. Did you have any problem wiring it up to the old system? If possible, can you draw up a quick schematic for the "visual" guys like me?

Wow!! ...Having 2 old Chryslers (a 1971 70hp and a 1973 85 hp, both have 3 cyls, one coil and points distributor) I also would seriously like to hear more about this... pics, diagrams,etc... Great info if this really is the answer and has stood up to the test of a few outings on the lake..... Good ole American creative ingenuity..

Its seems the old original cdi units are just a big ? when it comes to fixing these old motors. There is no good test for the unit. Its like you diagnose everything else and if all else "seems" well then you throw a used, old, "expensive" ebay cdi unit of questionable condition at the thing or buy the newer cdi electronics unit for $250-300. Then sure enough as most of the post read "that didnt fix it, ended up being something else after all". This would be a AWESOME upgrade and affordable solution to remove the old cdi "?" from the equation...

Also along those lines... Is there a affordable, newer, updated coil that would compliment this msd cdi setup?

Again.. If this really works I nominate this to be in the "sticky" thread of great information...

So I got a 55hp rude with the Motorola ign,it ran fine at half throttle but seem to lose spark after that,I did the test according to the book after I rewired all new.the test results came up as a bad amplifier,,I only have one coil on it and its a triple,so this should work.y wouldn't ant cd ignition work

I just did a similar conversion a few months ago. I used an older Jacobs box however, as well as a full-sized Jacobs automotive high-output coil. I also ran an 8.5mm coil wire and 7.5mm plug wires as well. It was almost a direct replacement for my magnafire box, and I picked up 200 RPMS on the tach from it. :)
