Finaly got a good carb and rebuilt it, solved fuel issue and now have igniton problem. Finally got service manual, found have 250,000 of resistance on white wire from pionts for cyl 1. Also found that the coils on boat are for a car. My question is there much of a differnce from a marine coil to a auto coil? Could the auto coils done any more damage that has not showen up yet, besides the burnt pionts. Does any one know if they sell a conversion kit from pionts to a solid state igntion system?

Typically, auto coils are set to use 9 volts. Since battery voltage drops to 9 volts while cranking, the coil gets full voltage for a fatter spark. After starting the battery and generator deliver 12 volts so there is a dropping resistor added into the circuit so only 9 volts is delivered to the coil.

You didn't say what your engine is but: Old outboards typically do not drop battery voltage so far and they use a 12 volt coil.
