I bought a 15' wooden sailboat and trailer not too long ago.
Looked at boat and NEW trailer, shook hands, finished the deal.
Came back to tow her to her new home.......
Checked tire psi, hooked it to my truck, kinda sorta checked the lights, (wired wrong, but hey! they are on)!
Grabbed my grease gun to pump up the B.B., pulled the rubber cover off and WTF?
There is no grease fitting, just a plate not a sealed plate but a cover where the grease fitting should be..
I can see fresh clean grease, so I put the cover on and towed the 20 miles home, (bearing hubs cool to the touch when I got home).
I DID notice there is a grease fitting on the inner part of the hub, but have never seem this type of B.B. before.
The trailer was bought for the boat in 2002, used to tow from North N.J. to Pa., and parked in a garage. Owner did NOTHING to it, so it was purchased that way?
Any info?
Can I just pump the grease into the back fitting until it come out the B.B. (kinda backwards) or "yank and toss" these???
Confused Joe

Don't like bearing buddies, but that's just me. As for your question, you can see what your talking about, we cannot.

Got pics?

My trailer has the Acculube hubs with the grease fitting in the center of the spindle underneath small rubber cap, and it works great at keeping fresh grease in bearings. Recently I replaced my old hubs with the Super Lube hubs that Ga Boater mentioned and they have the grease fitting on the inner part of hub as shown....so now I have 2 grease zerk fittings to put grease in, but that seems O.K. To me. But something worth mentioning, I've always added a stroke or 2 of grease every time I launched the boat(especially in salt water) and after so many years I had some bearings to pit and deteriorate anyway....so about once a year or so jack up each wheel and spin it by hand to listen/ feel for bad/warn bearings....better to check/replace at home than a catastrophic bearing failure out on the interstate highway!...

Pics...there are many types of systems. Bearing buddies, sure lube, super lube, accu lube to name a few. Some require you to not apply as much grease as others that are designed to pump grease through the hub.

I WAS going to take pics to find out WTF I had the day after I pulled her home, but, I got carried away after I cleaned up the boat, and covered it for the winter in Oct.
EVERY TIME the temp climbs to the 50's I kick myself in the transom for buttoning it up and parking it in the yard where it'd be a PAIN to extract to take the boat out..............
Looks like that "Super Lube" hub assy.
Looking at the bill of sail for the boat kit (Glen L 15' wooden Sailboat), the $9000 the P.O.'s P.O. paid to HAVE it built, he MUST have had $$, so I'm sure he wasn't cheaping out on the hubs!
I'll pull the hubs off this spring, check and re grease the bearings, and try to get pics or a name off it!
Thanks!
Joe
