JUST REPOWERED 2 WEEKS AGO WITH A 04 YAMAHA 150 4 STROKE. STARTED HEARING A WHINNING NOISE , SO I TOOK IT IN AND IT HAS A BAD BEARING!TOLD THAT IT WAS A FACTORY ISSUE. TOTAL CRAP. NOW THEY WANT TO SHORT BLOCK IT OUT WITHA FACTORY POWER HEAD. IN YOUR OPINION IS THIS ADEQUATE? OR WOULD A LONG BLOCK BE BETTER. THEY KEEP SAYING THAT THE HEADS ARE FINE. THE SERVICE MANAGER IS A FAIR GUY, BUT HE IS BEING TOLD BY YAMAHA WHAT TO DO.WHAT DO YA THINK?WHAT WOULD YOU DO? ALL ADVICE WELCOME.

Re: NEW 150 4 STROKE BEARING

the only way they ship them is without the head. have not heard of any bearing issures with any of the 4 strokes. however it is a production motor usuing production parts and like anything mechanical you may have the odd failure. make sure the remove and clean the oil sump and pick upstrainer or you may find failure #2. that would be a tech failure. also ya need to try to find out why bearing 1 failed. could have been from debris in the sump during assy. I got in volved with a new fifty a few years back, seems the techs put 2 powerheads on it and never checkked the sump. I put the 3rd on it and cleaned the sump and no further crankshaft issues.

i see about 1 f150 in 4 that whines. it always goes away when i relube the driveshaft bush.
personally i think the balance shaft gear with the preloaded spring gear tooth bs is gonna create problems with noise telegraphing. thats just my opinion. get a second opinion.

If Yamaha is going to pay for it, go with a powerhead. But as mentioned, there is a plastic bushing below the powerhead. They get no lubrication and some will whine at low RPMs and shut-up just off high idle. That's no reason to replace a powerhead. Are you sure they don't mean that they have to remove it to get at it? They do have to do that. What I've done in the past is grease the driveshaft before installing the gearcase, but that's only temporary. The grease goes away rather quickly and the whine comes back.

Funny, but if that was one of the 2-strokes, you'd never hear the whine because the motor noise would drown it out. The 4-strokes are so quiet that the tiniest most insignificant noise becomes noticable. If that is the bearing that is in question, it's really mechanically harmless. No damage is being done to the motor.

how are they so sure its a crank bearing? its rather rare to see a crank bearing failure at such an early stage. usuallyt if a crank bearing fails it has an associated loss of oil pressure and the alarm is triggered. the alarm on the F150 is not on or off but rather a computer map. if it wont maintain a mapped PSI at a specific RPM the alarm sounds. that and a lot of metal in the oil. I suspect someone is not on the right track.

i have had to relube drive shaft bushes at the 20 hour. our tech rep makes us run the engine with the gearbox off before he even entertains the idea something else is wrong. i dont even bother to call anymore.
