ok guys help me "guess" my problem so a can plan accordingly! this summer i rebuilt the 3.0 in my bayliner, i ended up sleeveing the block and boring it .040 over all new pistons ,redone rods, crank etc. after i rebuilt it in late june i ran it until sept 1st with out a single problem preformed flawless, heres the kicker...it sat until october 1st, when i went to winterize(we never got a frost prior to winterizing,so it didnt freeze). i started the engine up on the muffs (was gonnna change oil, drain water etc...usual stuff) well after about 10 min on the muffs i looked back to see it puking milky oil/water out of the oil fill cap! previous to this it hasnt taken on any water till it sat! Any ideas? only things i could think was (1) didnt replace manifold at rebuild, maybe it had a hairline crack that wasnt aparent when used often?? (2) when i assembled it i didnt have the gasket that does manifold-elbow i used red rvt it doesnt get that hot and seemed fine. (3) maybe a headgasket leaked?? (4) lastly isnt there some sort of flapper in the exhaust that prevents water from coming in?????
i always checked the oil before each outing, but i didnt check it before i ran it on the muffs just because i planned on changeing it so i'm unsure if it picked up water on the last outting or took it in while on the muffs (leaning towards took it while on the muffs) so any suggestions??? i just flushed the engine several times and put in fresh oil and figured deal with it in the spring... thanks for the input guys!

i ain't the pro here. and it seems your on the right track in your thoughts to me. but i'll bite.

seems like the manifold would be a real good place to start. specially the riser gasket. i'd get the right one. i found my manifold leak by removing it and filling the water jacket with water, then let it sit overnight. in my case, sure enough. next morning the water jacket was empty and the exhaust runner was full.

while i've never done it. i read that pressurizing the engine cooling side can also help locate a leak. guess ya gotta seal off the system somehow, then pressurize it up to 15psi and it should hold all day, if it don't guess ya follow the sound to the leak...

ya could also read up in your service manual to find out for sure it you have the shutters. i'd guess your supposed to. while your doing your manifold work go see if their there and intact.

best i can come up with.

Exhaust manifolds and their gaskets are ALWAYS the first things to check when you have water in a marine engine. Good luck.
