are you talking about the one seal under the omc cap? the one that has two bolts holding it down? which would be #29 in the above parts diagraham if this is bad water will come in thru the steering shaft and will seize the bearings but if this is what you are talking about its two bolts thats it.also I think you will have to break down the gimbal assembly if the other one is bad but take out the engine I dont think so the only thing that shaft is connected to on the inside is a 3/8 pin with a cotter pin thru it which can be reached from the inside

Good news!!!! Transom is nice and sturdy, gasket around the drive is good, steering shaft was the cause and I got to see the water stains when he got it apart. He beleives the pin is good and can be cleaned up and new seals installed. We were nervouse the pin would need to be re-hard chromed but it was ok. I guess a replacement is NLA. Y-pipe connection also looked good as well.

Engine will get a starter refresh, some new champion plugs, new oil & fuel filter, and a new bilge pump while it is out and easy to get to.

The shift cable hose looked OK, and when I asked if we should replaced it, he said he very rarly replaced these unless it rubs thru from improper routing. I know this tube is expensive but should I have it replaced?

I have had bad luck with champion plugs... Not just on boats.. Cars, lawnmower, chainsaws and tractors.. They just are not as good as they use to be... I run A/C delco in my tub.. They have been working good

All "new" plugs are crap I have found. Thankfully the motorcraft plugs are "autolite" spec'd a little more stringent for ford OEM. GM doesn;t seems to care about quality anymore with anything they make including AC delco, and the major bummer, the NGK plugs that we pulled from my friends 305 merc were cracked externally on the ceramic like they are crimped too tight.

Anything new is better than the carbon fouled hunks in there now. They look hard but not impossible to change if I have to.
