A few days ago, I discovered a long crack underneath the intake manifold on my '75 Mercruiser I-6 250cid.

After a little searching I found a block that is supposedly in good shape. The seller says that the camshaft is in the block, but the crank and pistons aren't, although he is including those with the purchase.

Anyway, what information would you guys recommend that I get from him prior to bidding? He says there are no visible crack on the inside or out and that the engine ran "great" the last time he ran it. He's got pictures of it, and it looks to be in good shape.

Everything else in my engine compartment is in great shape since I got a severe tune-up last year and I got the starter rebuilt. Is there anything that I should look out for?

Also, do you guys think that getting a newish block rebuilt would be cost prohibitive, considering how old the boat is already?

Re: New block

I dont think they took it apart because it was in ran GREAT  there had to be a reason

Do you have a shop to do the machine work and how do they feel about it ?

In general i would rather have a compleat motor that needed a rebuild than one that was laying around in bits and pieces
