ok so last summer i bought a hull only 2003 fish hawk 213wa (exact same boat as a hydra sport 212wa) and now have almost all the parts to put it together, I bought a rebuilt/reman 2001 ox66 200hp saltwater yamaha for it. but i have no idea what prop to buy for it?? boat is 21' according to hydra sports it weighs 3400 +- with a 200 hp engine (not sure if that was a 2 or 4 stroke, load wise i usually fish with total of 3 people and a 40 gallon bait tank filled +_ usual fishing gear. can anyone give me suggestions ive never had to pick out a prop before and dont have a clue.....thanks

Re: new boat new motor what prop...???

it can be some trial and error here...do you have a prop you can take a test run with??? preferably a 19...if you can find an outboard shop that would loan you a used prop with a deposit for a test run maybe..you want that motor to hit about 5500 RPMs at WOT and trimmed out. If I just had to buy one and guess..I guess 19 should be about right, you might could put a 21 on it but you will probably drop into the low 5s or high 4s..

There are others with more expertise than myself. But my limited experience indicates an al 15 X 15
should work. Could be a little light but its better to error on the light side as you can safely run it
and just watch your rpm.

Since you are adding Yamaha power, go to the Yamaha web site and check their "Performance Bulletins". You select your engine and then select the boat manufacturer and boat model. They then show you full performance data and the prop used on that test and its part number. One of the best sites of that type I've run across. They even have detailed fuel consumption data. If your boat has not been tested, pick one that is similar in size, type, and weight.

Re: new boat new motor what prop...???

I have been trying props lately and do not have the expertise to advise you, but what I have learned is that there can be significant performance variables between props just 1 inch different pitch, and 1/2 inch difference diameter--in fact, I am learning that the diameter is a major variable. I've also learned that you can make a prop work (or not) based on how high your motor is set on the transom.
The best arrangement is to find someone who will let you try them and return them--most likely these will be used props, an added bonus b/c they cost half as much! I am trying my third this weekend, after lots of great advice here.

You may very well be right though my very limited experience setps with similar setups and slightly higher numerical ratios seldom run higher than an 18" prop. The closest boat I found,a 3100
lb Hydrasport ran a 15 X 15. al prop.Unfortunatly not a Yamaha but had a higher numerical ratio.

Re: new boat new motor what prop...???

thanks for the help guys, the company i am buying the engine from said if they had a aluminum prop in when they are ready to deliver it they would give it to me....but dia. and pitch?? i guess there is no way to know until i try it.....what do most dealers do?i cant imagine they want customers returning props because they prop'd it wrong. i did look at the yamaha web site and didnt see any thing close. One thing a few people have told me is that its better off turning max or a little above wot rpms that way with a load it would still be in range and you can always back off on the throttle.... wish there was a easy chart like weight + hp + draft = prop size.....but we couldnt be so lucky i guess...

take the free prop for a spin and if it needs to be changed tell the seller they gave you the wrong prop and ask if they would give you the pitch prop that you need...you will know what you need once you take it for a spin.

Most dealers I've dealt with will let you take two or three props with you (for a deposit of course) to see which works best for you rig. Most have several used ones around to try with.
