Not necessarily.

Scenarios: best to worst.

1. Bad exhaust manifold/riser. $4-500.00/parts

2. Bad head gasket. Not much if you do it yourself.

3. Cracked block/head. Not toast but will require a bit of work.

It's a good runner if you can get it going.

By the way, #'s 1 & 3 are the most likely.

If you are talking about a little condensation on the dipstick or in the valve cover, that may be normal. These engines never reach a temp. high enough to burn it off.

yes the boat is new to us? but when we bought the boat it started right up and didnt have any noises coming from it the motor looked clean no oil leaking ect. we went back a second time with a friend who knows abit about boats and they started it again looked over the motor seem to be ok. We took it out on the water yesterday it ran ok but had a little vibration and back fired a couple times then seemed fine When we got it home this friend looked at it said the timing was out and fixed it up with the manual we recieved with it and then he thought maybe a lifter was sunken or sticking so the plan is to fix that But when we were looking at that we noticed the oil looking milky he thought it may be from condensation? or is that totally off? The oil in the bottom unit is milky too? lost when it comes to boats. any suggestions on where to begin looking or if its a waste of time?

It's hard to say, without seeing it. If the oil in the crankcase (block) is milky, you have a leak.

Most likely candidate is the exhaust manifold/riser. They can be checked.

The oil in the lower unit needs to be changed, if it is milky. Worst case scenario, the lower unit needs to be resealed.

Best case, the fill/drain plug seals are gone-easy fix.
