New Boat Owner - Problems

Hi,

I am a new first time boat owner and just bought a 2009 Stratos 186XT with an Evinrude E-tec 115 outboard motor (new). I took it out for the first time last weekend and it started just fine but when I put it in to gear it would die out. This would happen in reverse and forward. This happened pretty often (I'd say around 7 times before I could even get it going). Then every time I turned off the motor it was the same thing over again. Being a first time boat owner I have no idea if this is just because it is during the break-in period (which supposedly the Evinrudes don't need - that's what the dealer told me) or if there is a serious problem that I should address. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

Also one other question: I ended up scraping the bottom of the rudder (not sure if that's the right term) when taking the boat out of the water and the paint was scraped off and I can see the metal exposed. Do I have to repaint/seal that so it doesn't rust?

Thanks for your help!

Tai.

Take the motor back to the dealer for a warranty fix. E-Tecs should run perfectly during and after the double oil (breakin) time. I've got two '07 175's and they NEVER have stalled or stopped even once. You've clearly got an issue with the motor and it's not for you to fix unless you've got water in the gas. If your motor has the internal canister fuel filter, you would have a system alarm (which you don't mention) for water. Water in the fuel is about the only thing I can think of that would be for you to correct and which could cause what you describe.

In any case, you should let an authorized BRP dealer dope it out.

The skeg is aluminum, so it won't rust. You can get chromate primer and paint from a BRP dealer, sand the rough spots, prime and paint if it bothers you a lot.

Good advise on both qestions. The bottom of my skeg is quite scratched up ... it will get that way from running in shallow water or from forgetting to raise the motor before entering or exiting the launch ramp. Good luck with your new boat!

Dealer willfix the stall as others have said. I would get a can of ytouch up paint while your at the dealer to keep that baby looking factory fresh as long as possible. It will not rust but eventually you will see white oxidation forming. Better to stop it early.
