Hey all! First post here.

I am picking up my parents 97 glasstron next week that they havent used in acouple years. It has a 5.8FLPHVE. I have been looking all around and (I am probably just being blind) I cannot find appropriate documentation for maintenance. I can't even find the exact engine on volvo penta's site. I would really like to know the appropriate impeller to buy and replace as well as the correct motor and gear oil to use (including quantities). I have to tools to do the work myself, I just don't know what consumables to purchase.

If you have any other suggestions on what I may want to do / look out for to get it running (other than batteries since it has none currently) it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The "V" is actually a "U".

You have an "HU" model.

An HU was produced in 1995. You sure the boat is a 1997?

3862281 is your impeller number

Hmmm...interesting...I am not 100% sure that it is 97...I belive that the motor that is in my boat wasn't an option when the first owner bought it. This will sound ridiculous, but the original owner was pushing 400lbs, but liked to water ski, so he had to special ordered it with this motor...at least that's how the story goes lol. Maybe it was from an oder model...or maybe I am just crazy and it's a 95

Anyways thanks for the info. Can you also recommend a certain type of motor oil and how much to fill? Is there special marine oil?

You will get any number of recommendations for motor oil.

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my engine.

Just don't use multi-viscosity non synthetic oils like 10w-40.

I use the Volvo gear lube for the drive. I use to use the Mobil 1 lube but I can't find it anymore with out the limited slip additive.

Here's a link to your manuals, they are for the Volvo HU series.

Those are manuals for your fuel system, engine, and drive. They are downloadable and printable (if you ever need to) pdf genuine Volvo manuals that explain pretty much anything you will need for your outdrive.

4 shared isn't a torrent file either, so no viruses when you download them. It's where I got my manuals from

If you don't have any service records, I would change the engine oil, outdrive oil (VP gear oil you can order from Iboats), and change the u joint bellows (if you're not sure when it was last changed). I'd recommend you buying the OEM U joint bellows. You will have to pull the drive to change the bellow, but your gimble bearing and u-joint needs to be greased, inspected anyway. It's not a difficult job, and those manuals show step by step how to do it. If you get hung up, just post what problem you're having and there are plenty of people here who can help get you back going.

Having an alignment tool for ensuring your drive is aligned correctly with your gimble bearing and coupling is invaluable as well. You can pick one of those up pretty cheap on ebay. It is a VP/Mercruiser alignment tool. You check alignment when the drive is pulled. You should be able to get one shipped for around 50 bucks.

Here's a link to one.
