New boat painjob scratches off easily

My new boat paint job scratches off easily. If I bump anything against it the paint is coming off. This worries me because iv'e got the whole boat interior painted and I don't want to ruin it. Do I need to add a clear coat or something to make it more hardy.

1 coat of primer
2 coats of paint
Marine Paint

Marine paint that is oil based, Navy Blue
I painted a week and a half ago, it scratches off easily right now
Temps: 60-80 degrees

What ratio of hardener and reducer did you use? Depending on the temp and humidity I always do a test strip.
Is the paint scratching leaving bare aluminum exposed? If this is the case maybe your etching coat is not proper.

It sounds like a simple problem of the prep work. Whatever ratio of hardener won't matter, it can be hard as rock and if it can't stick it will just chip off. At this point you would have to rethink how to best prep so that your paint sticks to whatever surface you're trying to cover.

I meant what brand of Paint? Did you use their recommended Primer? Did you Use a Hardener or just straight oil based paint? With out a hardener. It can take up to a month for oil base paint to come to a full hardened cure @ temps 75? and above. Even @ full cure regular oil based paint will scratch fairly easily. What kind of things are causing the scratches at the moment?

Most any time a paint job has problems it is usually traced back to surface preparation, especially on an aluminum boat. On aluminum hauls use a Zinc Chromate primer followed with a good quality of a catalyzed primer compatible with the base coat or top coat of paint you plan on using. Incompatibility is another paint problem issue as well... Catalyzed base coats AND top coats solve tons of issue when painting, but only over properly primed and prepared sub surfaces. Most folks choose lower cost paints and side cut preparations and wonder why they don't get the results they thought they would get... Like most anything else, you get what you pay for and are willing to work at and prepare as you apply... Surely not saying that this is the case here, but just stating some truths...

The newer (? 2nd ?) paint job is only 10 days +/- old on the same boat as this paint work that wasn't holding up:

Did you use the same prep, primer & paint this go around as you did last time?

This is second hand oil smoking problem. Coz soo many boaters around with old 2 cycle motors expelling oil in atmosphere. Everything is oily. Couldn't paint anything. :glee:

Ayuh,.... Was the surfaces sanded before the primer,..?? After the primer,..?? 'tween the top coats,..??

Was it sanded, at All,..??

Based on your statement in your other thread, the problem is with the prep, NOT with the paint. As I stated in the OTHER thread, ALL successful paint jobs Begin and End with PREP. Bad Prep, Bad Paint Job. This paint job had Bad Prep!!! End of Story!

What Paint ?? Oil based does not help us at all .. What Brand of Paint .. number Etc...

Does the primer come off ? There is no reason for Any paint system to require a 2 week dry time unless its not been Baked on. I dont care what others think .. why wait two weeks to see how hard it is before you use it lol.

What paint system are you using ??

If you exceed the recoat time or need it to flash quickly in cool temps to avoid sags, having to much hardener can indeed cause peeling. Of course if bare aluminum is showing the problems are with the prep.
I have used water and dish soap for years on painted and bare surfaces. Dry it then apply the metal prep of choice and start painting.
The substrate has to be clean and free of grease, oil and even airborne contaminants. I've painted a number of aluminum tubs for FJ40's and it can't be painted like sheet metal.

He freely admitted in his other thread he did not pay very good attention to his Prep. This is another good example why it's a good idea not to open multiple threads on the same topic. It can be very confusing to posters not familiar with all the other postings.

Paint work is simply 100% all about the prep work. You can make a paint bond fully to anything as long as you prep it properly.

I dont really know if you repainted the boat since your last problem, or are just fishing for easier answer, doesnt really matter at this point. But if you really want to fix yer paint, we can get it to stick for you, but you need to follow whats suggested, and really need to post some pics. use photobucket, its free and makes big, clear pics, so we can see what you see.
