we recently got a 1968 mercruiser 120hp i/o, we have several problems that of course the seller did not bother to talk about, first is when you open it up as soon as it hits 40,000 rpm the engine cuts out and you have to back off, second is it takes on water, we sat the boat in the water for 15min pulled it out and the lower plug poured water for 5 mins, the only thing I have found is the drive shaft bellow has a 1 inch hole in it, also I redid the silicone around transom but nothing worked. How is water getting into the bottom of the boat? any ideas? thanks

Not a surprise   :p

Assuming you meant 4,000, I would be looking a points, cap, rotor, sparkplugs first. Start with a full tuneup, probably hasn't had one in a while, and do a compression test just so you have a base line for your NEW to you boat.

If the bellows is torn, that will allow water to get into the boat and the drive, ujoints, and gimbal bearing. Replace it, and forget sillycone. Useless stuff on a boat.

Get yourself Mercruiser service manual #1, you are going to need it.

Re: New Boat Problems

the guy said he recently rebuit the carb, dont know about the electrical stuff, will check it out. how is the boat taking on that much water? I dont know much about boats but I am mechanical just cant picture where the water can get into the false bottom of boat, no holes or leaks on hull itself.
