I picked up a Javelin F&S which has 120hp Evinrude on it , the other day and was just prepping it for my first time on the water with new boat . Like full of fuel , fire extinguisher , extra set of spark plugs ,so on and so on .
My question is the previous owner has changed the spark plugs to a QL16V spark plug and it calls for QL78YC , I spoke to Champion and they was telling that there is a difference in plugs but wont say if it was okay to run that plug . or to change it out for the original style ,

Side note : the QL16V was alternate plug for the QL78YC , I just want to make sure that it will not damage the motor by running them . Please help !

It would help to know which 120 you have. Please post a model #. It will be something like E120...

When I looked the engine up on the Champion web site it called for QL78YC , its' even a different heat range that's why I was asking the question .I'm not try to argue I just wanted to make sure , then when I called Champion they recommended staying with the QL78YC plug and I couldn't understand why .

I belive the 16v is a surface gap plug. QL78YC could well be an alternate. QL16v is what is called for in those though. I didn't see the model number till now so I didn't grab a manual from the shop to see what the alternate is.

You really do not want to trust champion, goto evinrude . com. Goto parts, goto 94, choose e120tlerc, goto cylinder and crankcase, it list the plug there I am sure.

I agree with you guys but now you understand how I got started down this road , when someone in the company tells you something about there product it makes me stop and pause and take a second look , yes it was a surface gap plug . Thanks for your quick response I hope to get it out on the water this weekend and go play with the family.

This motor requires the QL78YC due to having a VRO/OMS...tis no alternate from BRP.
