Re: new boat wont start

Like I said in the other post before we had so much fun with ya, it's a Force outboard powerhead. If you post in the outboard forum, you will get better answers and perhaps ways of testing. It could be a stator problem, trigger, switch box, or all of the above.

Those L-Drives had a problem with the stators. And I bet its in a Bayliner!

Dont mean to sound rude... Get rid of it!! Next will be the outdrive!

web page

Stator, and CD packs keep going out as well as the outdrives. It keeps getting costly on the owners.
Sorry...My 2 cents only. Take it for what its worth.

1 ck all plugins for broken or corroded wires
2 ck the flywheel for loose magnet
3 disconnect the kill wire and make sure there is no voltage present (flip the switch several times)
4 ck the stator for burned spots or discolored spots, if in the alt. windings ck the rectifier
5 with the kill switch disconnected and everthing else hooked up the stator should put out 180+ volts useing a DVA meter or ring test between the blue and yellow wires 700to 900 ohms.
6 If you need parts don't buy oem use CDI or Rapair

Re: new boat wont start

if its an L drive put it up on ebay for parts. they were made 2 or 3 years then dropped. mecury bought out US Marine and never supported the L drive. best I can say is they were an abortion at best when new.
cost of a new switch box is more then the entire package is worth.
that being said
if you desire to work on it yourself there is some test equipment and manuals you will have to have. one is a CD-77 or equivalent meter. the other is a good DVM, the other is a spark tester with a 1/2" to 7/16ths" gap. and a service manual. without the above your only alternative is to take it to a shop. beaware most shops cant spell FORCE L DRIVE much less still work on them .

BD, here is some info for you.
The magnets are all around the inside of the flywheel. Like rodbolt says, without the equipment and the manual you are in way over your head.
See the picture below.
CD Pack (aka Switch Box) -each $306, 2 required.
Trigger----------------------- $492
Stator Assy ------------------ $352
Coil ---------------------------$64, 4 requiered.

Re: new boat wont start

ok thats exactly what i got, now i have an ignition test jsut a light that plugs onto the sparker telling if its sparking, and i was wondering if the stator has to be positioned any certain way. and the cd packs, they look as if they have two grounds each, are these actually two grounds or do they need to go somewher else? if you guys bear with me this might just be something i messed up when i was taking it apart or something like that.

make sure your safety kill switch isnt triped..i cranked my engine over for almost an hour before i noticed the switch was pulled...lol its that little rope like thing you connect to your rist in case you get thrown from the drivers seat that pulles lose and cuts the engine... just a thought. randy
