I'm trying to decide between a Suntracker 22 tritoon w/3.0 merc i/o....or 25' Crest tritoon w/150 yamaha 2 stroke. My first pontoon boat, price is not a problem. suggestions please.

Re: New Boat

Our pontoon guys must all be off with their 'toons this holiday!

Generally speaking, outboards are found more often on small boats and inboards on the big ones. So the two 'toons you are considering really stand this rule on its head. Example: a 4.3L I/O would be nice for the 25' boat and a 115 4-stroke OB would be a good pick for the 22' boat. Keep in mind that outboards are especially nice if the 'toon is kept in a slip.

Hopefully our 'toon guys will start showing up after the holiday. Meanwhile, here is a good thread on the I/O vs OB choice -

i/o verses outboard verses inboard

Stay tuned :) ,
Kelly Cook

Re: New Boat

hey rohan, i have been researching these pontoons for 3 weeks now. let me tell you this. i am about to purchase the party barge 200 with a 60hp 4 stroke bigfoot. what are you looking to do with your toon?? i had the 3.0 merc in a 175 bayliner. that boat went pretty nice. (trimmed up 45 mph light chop) from what i have read, bigger diam toons, more speed. a 3.0 on a 22ft would be sweet. it is a car engine. easy maint. reliable and quiet. 2 strokes are on their way out. it is inevitable. check out calif. specs. anyways i am no expert just a regular joe like you. good luck

Re: New Boat

Thanks for the input. sorry so long in reply, have been trying to buy this darn boat. I am going with a Crest 25'party barge. I am going with a Yamaha 150 vmax efi ox66. I prefered the 150hpdi but there is not one available for months. I also wanted a four stroke but none to be had in a 150. I got a tri toon and i think with this motor it's gonna move real nice. I talked with a handfull of dealers and everyone said the hpdi gets better gas useage but no loss on power with the vmax. I don't really need to pull skiers but I want to pull my kids on tubes and carry 10-12 people and get around quick. I'm blurry eyed from reserchin this and will be glad to get on the water. Good luck....rohan
