A buddy of mine and I have recently acquired one hell of a deal on a boat with trailer for 80$! It is a 1973 Caravelle runabout 15" with an old Chrylser 70 HP...2 stroke(Dont know if thats obvious) outboard I THINK it might be the original? maybe someone knows.. its got a few problems but we got the motor to start and drove it around a bit. I have a few questions and will probably be referring to this forum frequently. But If anyone has any idea tips or help with these kinds of motor/boat it would be much appreciated. I dont know alot about boats or outboards but do have some solid automotive knowledge. so without further rambling.. What kind/octane gas would you want to use in this motor? also it pulls hard to the right if you don't hold the wheel, and hardly turns to the left. You have to get the throttle quite aways down before it clunks into drive as well.

Sorry for rambling and thanks to anyone who can help

Re: New boat!

Definitely a 2 stroke. Search the forums as there's lots of tips on how to get an older outboard "ready". 87 octane is fine, but if you can find gas w/o ethanol, that's ideal. Carbs cleaning, LU fluid changed, water pump svcd....all things that need to be done before you use it much. Also, check fuel lines for corrosion, etc. Sticky at top of this forum is a good source of info and lots more in the "restoration" forum.

Re: New boat!

Someplace on the motor is a tag with model and serial# Post it and we can figure out the year.
The 70 was made in 79-80 and possibly much older.
Pulling to the right or left.
On the bottom of the drive.Exhaust snout is also the trim tab.If it pulls hard to the right then move the tab to the right.

Change ALL the hoses and get rid of the inline connectors.
New squeezie.
Rebuild the fuel pump.
Regular gas is OK.
50-1 mixture.Too much oil is as bad as not enough.
Clean the carb, make sure all the TINY holes are clear.
The top/center screw is the air/fuel mix screw.
Inital setting is one turn out.
Then motor warm, running, turn in till it gags/stutters/coughs or stalls then out 1/2 turn.

Shifting: Loosen the connectors and try centering the shifter and motor linkage and then rehook, adjusting the connectors as needed.
Possible the shifter needs tightening or the cables need replaced.
Shifting slowly into gear is bad.Direct and right into gear.
You can eventually do damage to the clutch dog.

These motor will last a LONG time if taken care of.They are a bit harder on gas.
