I'm in the process of buying a boat but hate buying things I know nothing about. Is there a good source, book or online, about i/o motors so I can at least speak the lingo. What do I need to check before even taking the boat out for a spin?

There is no book or website that will tell you in a few minutes what takes years to learn.Forget about lingo.your best action to take is to find a boat you like and can afford and pay a professional to survey it .Let the seller know that this is what you plan to do and they will not tend to hide as much from you. To start with, basically, i just want definitions about what different components do in normal engine functioning. This way I can build on my knowledge from there.

It would also help to order a service manual for whatever engine you have.

Also buy "getting statred in Power baoting" The first section describes all the types of boats and helps you decide which is right for you.

Do you have any friends that have bought a boat in the past. check with them to find some good resources, or just go "looking" at different dealers for new and used, talking to many different people you will learn alot about diffent boats/manufacture's.

You can buy all the books on the shelves and you won't learn enough to buy a boat knowledgeably by yourself. You will learn a lot terminology, parts, construction, etc. But you definitely should get a pro to check out any hoat you are considering.
The pro should be able to do the following:
Check the hull with a moisture meter.
Thoroughly check the engine and outdrive (if you have one).
Check the electrical connections throughout.
Run the boat at slow and high speeds.
Make sure you have all the required safety equipment. i.e., Make sure you'll pass Coast Guard requirements.
Check the trailer. Brakes, wiring, tires, hitch, etc.
...... Heck this list could go on and on.
The point is you need someone qualified to look for any major problems or signs of problems that might arise. Someone who will do that for around $200.
That expenditure could save you thousands in the long run.......
Good luck.

If you are new to the boating world then a course in "Boating safety" would be a good idea. Look for classes that is given by the Aux Coast Guard in your area. They are good course and teaches you everything about boat safety and navigation on the water. I took one a few years ago and was very enlightening.
