How do I install this damn thing?

http://www.masonmarine.net/mercruis....html?osCsid=20dcde056f25cfb4eede55be23266f65

Someone please help. I just bout this boat used and was told I need to install the exaust elbow bellow. The rubber piece is way to big to fit in the area in needs to go, So I'm guessing I need to remove something to fit it in. I tried to loosen the 4 bolts on what looks like the exaust manifold, but a green liquid started to come out(coolant?) so I tightened it back up.

I'm not very handy with repairs but this was just suppose to be a rubber piece that slips over two openings and I was suppose to secure it with metal clamps.

Any help or advice would be great.

The boat has a 470 mercruiser.

The easiest way is to remove the exhaust elbow...and yes, you will loose a small amount of engine coolant when removing the elbow. Be 100% certain you have all the correct gaskets and reinstall the blanking plate the right-way-'round.
Oh, and while the elbow and bellows are removed, examine the exhaust passage for foriegn objects...remmants of exhaust flappers.

Thank you for your help. Is it 100% guarantee that I will need a new gasket or is there any chance that I can reuse the gasket? If not, how can I tell what gasket I need?

In regards to the coolant, just so I don't scare myself. Will It spill enough coolant to where I will need to get some more?

99.6% certain for new gaskets.
Not knowing your year nor whether you have the cast iron or aluminum manifold:
...start here for aluminum: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/M...EXHAUST MANIFOLD-EXHAUST ELBOW (ALUMINUM).pdf

...and here for cast iron: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/M...XHAUST MANIFOLD-EXHAUST ELBOW (CAST IRON).pdf

Set the trailer bow down to get the manifold parting flange above the coolant fill cap level to reduce the coolant loss.

If it looks like this: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show.../46.png&inbr=908&bnbr=230&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW (newer model) you just need to loosen all 8 clamps and slide the pipe down enough to get the piece on, takes a little finagling, and sometimes the rubber sticks to the pipes a little, but should be able to work it on. BTW why did you have to replace it. If it was melted, you can be pretty sure that your exhaust shutter (#6) is shot too, better take a look while you are at it. Good luck.
