I have a 1974 85 horsepower Johnson outboard motor. It is on my pontoon boat that I have been building. I recently replaced the starter and the starter solenoid and next was the spark plugs and once I started it Sparks were coming from 1 of the coils, it had a chip out of one side. I bought four new coils & since it has been over a week or so since I took the first two coiled off I cannot recall how to hook the wires up when putting the new ones on. I have a 1974 owner's manual but the picture that I'm wanting or needing is not in there. Can someone let me know how to hook the coils up. It's the two on the starboard side. Ty

Should be easy.-------50 / 50 chance you are right.------If not then switch them.-------No damage will be done if you do not get it correct at first.

And now I have another dilemma the old coils had wires coming out of the left side all of these coils have wires coming out of the right side. Before purchasing is I change at my local Marine shop and they said it didn't matter what number of the coil it was that all of the parts for the same. Like 1 coil for all. Anyhow will ignore the other side I noticed there was no ground coming to the outside toilet like there is on the right side. So I would have to reach the short coil wire over the coil itself or do I put it to the same bolt that has the ground?

I did state that the cover for the power pack was labeled. I was just trying to get pictures to illustrate what I am doing. From this forum I have received 0 help. So please if you do not have any information to help me further in my coil insulation please don't comment

Obviously there is a lesson learned with this setup. ALWAYS take a few pictures of anything you decide to work on. You never know when those pictures will come in handy.

The picture of the coil wire with the terminal lug you posted, does that "short" wire go to ground? If so, then you can ground it at the coil itself. If it goes to the terminal b lock shown in an earlier picture, you have one of two issues. You can always splice it or take a another wire with a terminal end, and using a small bolt and nut and attach to it to give you the needed length. However if you go that route, make absolutely sure you use some shrink tube over the bolt and nut so that it is insulated from touching anything else. JMHO
