I am going to look at a boat with a KAD4.3 6cyl volvo/penta diesel. 230Hp with 285 hours...

What is the lifespan of this engine? and what should I be looking at as far as upkeep and maintenance on a diesel with that many hours?

I am having it surveyed.... just never owned a diesel....

Excited that I found one in my area that meets my needs... going to look at it tomorrow

Re: new diesel owner

It's a KAD43, not 4.3. They are great running engines, and with maintenance done per specs should be good for 10,000 hours.
It's a wet sleeve engine.
Weak points are the belt tensioners and used to only last a couple of years around salt water.
The other thing they hate is water in the fuel. If it gets into the injector pump, it's $2000 just to get the pump rebuilt, and that doesn't include R&R of the pump, and the injectors go also.
Keep clean fuel to it, pop test the injectors every other year, and keep up with the maintenance and you should be good for a looooooong time.

Re: new diesel owner

That's great news Don... thanks alot...
I am looking at 2003 26ft seaswirl with with the KAD43... asking 67,500, but I am going to have it surveyed and get the price down a few thousand... with 285 hours on a gas engine, I would have some conerns, but 285 on diesel is not too bad if properly cared for... the dealer sold the boat new in 03 and the owner upgraded to larger boat... I think cabo...

anyway, I am going to sea trial it tomorrow... I am looking forward to 2-4 gph instead of the 5-8 I was preparing for with gas...

again thanks Don
