I can't believe they changed the law. Really bad timing for your son anyway.

I'm sure they changed it based on teen death statistics. I will say that in our small high school in my senior year alone, we lost 6 teens to automobile accidents.

MY, there is a positive side to this. Your son can work a full summer and save more money for a car and you have a an extra year before he becomes 'mobile' when the worst of your nightmares begin. :p

This legislation was passed because of, once again, the minority of the population, and organizations like MADD.

The legislators of NY do not have you in mind, just how legislation (that further oppresses you) that they sponsor looks on their resume!

The only good they are doing, is for themselves!

Kenny

MY
We don't need laws like that, our youth should be encouraged not stepped on! I have heard talk of that going down here also. My son has had his since the day after he turned 16. Ok he did bump a pole (girl watching) did little damage to the old car he was driving. He has also held a job since so he has the money to run around. (I’m cheap) I think the young adults’ need this responsibility, how are they to be expected to deal with what they don't know? Driving is a privilege, no it is a must! Just try doing anything, going to work, getting food, dating, etc. without a car/truck. But I think they should be able to buy beer at 18, or the age for military should be 21! Just my $0.02 worth.

Richard

MY, that bites. How are the 16 year olds supposed to get to their jobs, help take care of the family and learn responsibility? If there is a problem with the accident rate, then why not change the education process and the penalties for violations instead of doing this to all the kids and parents.

Rwise, I totally agree. I was pretty close to the last group of people to enjoy an 18 drinking age. I had no problem signing up for the draft as it was my duty for my country. Heck, I am part Swiss and would have had to do a mandatory stint in the military if I lived there.

I really have a problem with 13 and 14 year olds being waived into adult court, having to register for the draft at 18, being able to vote at 18, yet not being able to drink until 21. So you can go and die for your country before we trust you to make a decision whether to drink or not. It's obsurd.

It sounds like the newly enacted law might be the cause of an increase of car thefts, just as the liquor thefts increased when the national drinking age was raised to 21. This was not a manditory law, but if states did not comply with the 21 age, they would lose mega $$$$$$ in federal aid.
A proud menber of D.A.M.M.
:D (Drunks Against Mad Mothers) :D
...Bob in Calif...

Fellows stop and think about the insurance companies lobby the pol in every state to control their pay outs. They still won't lower you r premium because of this either.
Insurance brokers control this country from the middle and whom ever controls from there controls both sides to. I feel for the young man because I know that was a big step in his life to manhood.

That's just bullsh**! It's bad enough here when you get your license between 16 and 18 the first 6 months you can't have any passengers under 21 unless they are family members. I'll be 18 in a month (Yippeeee!) and I don't have my license yet, but it still pisses me off. If they say it's because 16 year olds have the most accident then it will just move up to 18 year olds having the most accidents. If they made you wait 'till 30 to get your license then 30 year olds would have the most accidents, that's all there is to it.

What a bummer. I had the same thing happen to me. The law in MA changed the drinking age from 18 to 21 went into effect 2 days, yes 2 days, before my birthday!

Re: new driver lic. law in NY

i do hate it for your son MY, but i went through the same down here. in hindsight, its all good.

the older drivers tend to have less accidents, and i truly believe its being regulated by the insurance companies, like the lawmen said.

if he doesn't believe in 'everything is for a purpose' then he might go for 'well, you have more time to save more and get a nicer ride' ;) :D :D

i hope he is still allowed to drive as long as an adult is with him. i was wearing that option out back then. maybe its your chance to spend more 'quality time' on the road with your son :)

My 2 cents, here in La. 16 and under, when making an arrest, you have to call the parents in, they are considered a Juvenile, but can still get a Driver's license. Of course depending on the offense, they may be tried as an Adult.

At 17 you can arrest them book them in jail, and they are called an Adult.

At 18 they can vote and be drafted, into the Service, handed a rifle to Kill or die for their Country.

At 18 they can drink in a bar, accompanied by a Parent or guardian.

At 21 they can drink unsupervised.

In my opinion, somebody needs to make up their mind when an Adult is an Adult. I can see why our youth are confused, it seems the Adults making Laws, can't make up their own minds.

Again, Insurance Company's and more and more laws and lawyers, just drive up our costs to fit their needs.

Mellow Yellow, I know your son is dissapointed, and may be confused. I know it is of no comfort, but I can identify, I'm confused too, and I don't always like having to enforce a few of them.

GodsBeast

Re: new driver lic. law in NY

Here in MS they let the kids get their permits at 14 if they take drivers ed. and at 15 and a half, if they have a job, they can get their license. Its been smooth sailing for the wife and me. The Swamptater has been driving since the middle of June doing yard work plus working for a home builder making really good money for a 15 year old. The only problem we've had is his cell phone bill.....it came in last month at over $400....he paid it off in full and told all the little girls to quit calling him.

I dont think the government thinks we do a good
enough job of bringing up our children. The age
requirements and laws change, to reflect the way
society thinks. It reacts to our social problems
and large business concern. Big insurance
company's have their own agenda and profit
analysts determine who is a liability and who is
not.
You can still get a learners license here at 14
I think that is to young.

Re: new driver lic. law in NY

I have mixed feelings about the 18 year old age requirement but if they are going to do that why not still issue a learners permit at 15. That would allow for 3 years of supervised driving. That would probably prove more effective than raising the driving age. Many states are adopting a progressive licensing system setting driving limitations at certain ages. Such as restricting hours, passengers, etc. In this state kids can get their license at 15 after taking drivers training (farm kids at 14). Parents can request revocation of the license untill they are 18. Young drivers are only allowed 6 penalty points against their license (12 is normal)and can easily lose the license (untill they are 18?) with 2 or 3 speeding tickets or an exhibition or reckless driving violation. Then they have to start the process all over again. I personally like those controls. It requires them to be more carefull and responsible and gives some room for error but not too much. I don't normally endorse such regulation but see too many cases where the parents fail to adequately set and enforce their own controls.
